I tackle life goals six months at a time. I do what I dream of doing, and actively ignore everyone telling me otherwise. One of the most intelligent people I ever met told me I was a complete waste of talent. My blog chronicles those squanderings.
In 22 years, I worked part-time for close to a dozen different employers. After every job, I learned at least a few valuable lessons, acquired new skills, and died a little on the inside.
I wait on tables and run take-out at a Chinese restaurant. I was a sullen teenager behind a over-caffeinated, overly- cheery-sales-associate-mask at Old Navy. I gutted houses, interned with Maxim Magazine and Maxim Online. I was a Resident Assistant for 14-year olds in upstate-New York and LA, 17-year olds in Nanjing, China, and college students at Rutgers University. And in case anyone’s counting, the 14-year olds were the most intelligent, the 17-year olds made me consider a vasectomy, and college students are little bitches.
I simultaneously held three positions throughout college. My last two years, it was four: residence life at Rutgers, interning with Maxim Magazine Online, consulting at a computer lab, and editor for a college magazine. My last semester, I helped found and served as the managing editor for Rutgers’ first Asian American-focused newspaper.
Post-graduation, I was completely and utterly unemployed for the first time since I was 14. Now, I’m writing my first book, a collection of humor essays on the Asian American experience in white suburbia. I’m also traveling, transitioning towards a minimalistic lifestyle, and Crossfitting. None of those involve seeking or obtaining employment, and I hope to remain far away from the 9 to 5 life for a long time.
