Gauri Nawathe How do you counter people who tell you that advertising is mostly about manipulation? I was told this often when I decided to get into advertising.

Smile and walk away. Manipulation is just a negative term for "encouragement"; anything can be spun, it's just the word that's used.

Alison Rayner What is the best way I can make myself attractive to ad agencies looking to hire students? I've joined the local Ad Club & volunteered for them a bunch, but is there more I could be doing to wedge myself into this exclusive industry?

Anything to show that I wasn't afraid of doing the work others shy away from in order to let others get to know me & for me to understand the workings of company culture. Unfortunately, the guy I was working with to set it up changed companies & the idea died there.

Pick yourself up and start over in a new place or with a new person. Perhaps you can follow the person who left and open up new connections there. The probability that the person feels a little responsible and will help even more. Use what you've got and never let up, you'll be fine. It may not feel that way at times but somehow it works out. The scars on the backs of successful people are too numerous to count, but they rarely mention them, just part of the cost of success. Have fun and you'll have a lot of great stories to tell. If it were easy everyone would be doing it and it would be way too crowded.

Michael McGar Business experience is essential, though in my 30 years of starting and owning companies, I have always just jumped in and started swimming. Owned my last company 13 years, 90 employees when I sold it. Takes hard work, lots of skill and lots of luck. Mostly just not giving up when all seems bleak, believe in yourself.
