Eoghann Irving I'm curious. How many of you enjoy watching old black and white movies? I've noticed that amongst my peers there's a tendency only to watch movies from the late 70's (or sometimes 80's) and onwards. I suspect this is relates to the age of the people and what movies they grew up watching.

Ty Unglebower I don't use receipts and contracts for my freelance work. I am a freelance writer in the sense that I pitch ideas to publications or websites, and they either accept the idea, and send me a check for my work, or they do not. It's one piece at a time, one publication at a time, one check at a time. I am not on retainer anywhere, as it were, so articles, books, and comments oriented towards the business end of freelancing, (other than marketing myself) often don't fit my situation. Is this bad?

If thats your personal preference by all means go for it. That said, if you want to add a professional look to your business then theres no doubt WP tops the list. Susan - not posting prices is again a personal preference. But i as a client will always look for some info on the pricing - be it as a formal fee structure or an hourly rate.

Michael Leins Found a good quote for all us goal-setters to think about when we get down and don't feel like continuing : You offer a gift to society that only you can bring. If you don’t bring it, it won’t be brough.

Michael Leins Fantastic idea for a group! I posted a goal on my blog (http://portfoliopromo.blogspot.com/) to finish a vector drawing I've been doing, by the end of February. I'll be sure to post again by the end of the month!

Lori Fagerholm Hi all. I'm a freelance digital illustrator and graphic designer. I'd like some advice on estimates. When I submit a proposal or even try to estimate how long a personal project will take, I'm either woefully over or under. How do I deal with the inevitable "But, your last estimate was so much lower!" I don't want to appear unprofessional, and I don't want to lose clients based on high estimates--even accurate ones. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Jessica: I agree with throwing back problem clients--experience backs this up 100% for me. James: great formula; I used one like it to come up with my hourly rate, which is competitive for my region. Kevin: I recently implemented the hybrid scheme, it works well. Michael: great idea about billing no more than 10% over estimate! Follow-up: what to tell returning client? Last project: 25 hours spent, but only 9 estimated and billable! So new proj est. will be much higher.

I broke down all of the estimated time for them (sketches, revisions, digital formatting), gave an hourly rate and said I'd let them know if we were scheduled to go over/under. This allowed me to keep track of my time pretty closely (good for future estimates) and be transparent with the client about time. Be confident about your hourly rate. Illustration/design is a highly skilled craft and if they value their identity, they want quality work.

Michael Leins If anyone is in to baseball, there's an indy doc coming out this summer that I helped out on, about Christy Mathewson, one of the first 5 ball players elected to the hall of fame. Michael Leins I'm a flash animator (early beginner) and I'm looking for some tips. Specifically, how to animate body movements with motion and.or shape tweens. I have a hard time making sure a forearm doesn't sharply disconnect from the upper arm, ect. Anyone have any ideas?
