My name is Melissa Malott and I'm the Director of the Water Program at Clean Wisconsin. I'm an expert on the most urgent water issues in the Midwest, whether it's about clean water or water shortages, and I work to pass policies to protect clean and abundant water. To that end, my work means I've got to be press-savvy, strategic, able to work with a variety of business and political leaders, and successfully able to analyze policy (both written and unwritten).
While I've always enjoyed the outdoors, I am interested in this work because of the implications it has for our health and economy. Water is the oil of this century, after all.

At Clean Wisconsin, my job is to design and manage the water program, including plans, budgets, grants, and staff. I create strategic campaign plans, perform legal and policy research and writing, advise coalition partners on proposed policies and legal strategy. I also implement our campaigns, which involves organizing citizens, educating and lobbying state legislators, and pursuing enforcement of clean water regulations.
My job requires me to be strategic, have excellent communication skills, and be a persuasive public speaker.
This is a volunteer activity that I was appointed to by the Dane County Executive, Kathleen Falk.
The Commission has assumed a coordinating role among the many state and local agencies with programmatic and regulatory responsibilities for water quality and water resources management in Dane County. The Commission also has an advisory role to the Dane County Board and the County Executive. Its statutory responsibilities include conducting or coordinating studies of local surface waters and groundwater, maintaining liaisons with other public agencies involved in protecting or managing water resources, and developing public information programs.
The Commission participates in reviews and makes recommendations regarding of the relevant portions of county agency budgets which have related responsibilities, including the Dane County's Land Conservation Department, Public Works Department and the Sheriff's department.
At Community Justice Inc, I organized, incorporated, and managed non-profit law firm that provided legal services for low income Wisconsinites. I litigated several dozen civil cases for low income clients over the course of two years in family law, domestic abuse, mental commitment, and landlord-tenant cases.
My job here required me to be a self-starter, stay motivated and focused, be a great listener, and be persuasive.
I helped co-found Emerge Wisconsin, which is dedicated to recruiting, training, and inspiring Democratic women to run for office. Emerge Wisconsin is an intense, 6 month training program on the nuts and bolts of running a political campaign. As founder, I recruited the first board, helped hire staff, drafted the state incorporation and IRS tax documents, and drafted the bylaws.
