The first thing you'll notice about my resume (below) is that I'm "currently" employed in three positions at three difference companies–I love what I do, and I do it a lot. In fact, after graduating with a BA in English I decided to go back to school for a masters in publishing, and learn more about my field.
I share my story in more detail at www.jargonwriter.com and on twitter as @melissabreau (http://twitter.com/MelissaBreau)–or, feel free to send me an email: mbreau@jargonwriter.com if you'd like to chat.
At Macfadden Communications Group I work within the Pet Division, where I write, edit and proofread three publications: Pet Business Magazine (a monthly), Grooming Business Magazine (a bi-monthly) and The Pet Elite (a quarterly). I manage the news and new products sections of Pet Business, manage the original editorial photo spreads that we publish in The Pet Elite and work as the ThePetElite.com web editor.
I also write a number of articles for each issue of each magazine–I'm typically working on between 2 and 4 articles at a given time (in addition to the news and new product pages).
Moxy exists because I saw a need for a smart magazine aimed at the woman who has big dreams and even bigger balls. Part Esquire with estrogen and part Cosmo with cojones, this isn’t the feminine hygiene section of the grocery store or your typical women's magazine. Moxy is where sassy, scrappy and sophisticated women go when they’re ready for something to sink their teeth into.
I specialize in helping business owners put their passion into words. I have worked with a diverse range of clients (a horror writer who published a graphic novel, a pet portrait painter, a composting alternative company and a psychotherapist).
Working hand-in-hand with the editorial assistant, I helped create interdepartmental memos and briefs on books being suggested for publication. I oversaw and managed the book review process for several titles, including finding and contacting individual reviewers. This also included finding experts to write blurbs for the books' jacket copy. I helped input copy editing corrections to manuscripts and wrote and edited jacket copy.
Before leaving I was asked to train the following semester's interns and helped create an intern training manual.
Originally hired as an intern, my organization skills quickly transitioned me into an office manager position. I put in place a number of new processes for tracking project scheduling and team member schedules.
I also served as a proof reader and copy editor for ads the department put out and for honorary citations (created for graduation).
