TOP IDEA: Whitney May Parker What's your strategy for succeeding at a new job right from the start? One thing I like to do is take the time to meet each of my new colleagues one-on-one and ask them for insights. I also like to write out a plan with key goals and tasks for the short, medium, and long term (although they always change!). What's your strategy?

1) Willing to accept duties out of their job scope and do it well, even if it doesn't come from their immediate supervisor.

2) Be alert and quick to spot problems - even better if you can offer solutions and help solve it. Some people have the misconception that they're doing extra work without the extra pay, but it will pay of in the long run because you will become the go-to person to solve problems and those are qualities of a good manager.

3) Research and keep up with the latest news in your job function so you seem informed.

4) Get to know people who are top in your industry and study what they have that you don't have and work towards acquiring those skillsets and connections. Spot opportunities that allow you to acquire those skills.

5) Communicate a lot with top management or if you have alot of layers of management in between, try to probe the right questions from mid-management and piece the rest together from everyone else so you can get the big picture and long-term strategic goals for the company and align yourself with it.

Ryan Healy Anyone see "The Social Network" yet? Definitely going to check it out this week, I heard nothing but great reviews so far.

The Social Network will win the Best Picture Oscar and I certainly not the only one saying so. Publicity hounds and provocateurs will say it ain't the truth and it's Hollywood and they will get ink - but it is largely the truth, most of the specific events and all of the messages are accurate. In any case it is both great entertainment, fantastic quality writing and directing - and of course a great story. What it may tell us about Facebook that is useful is another thing and not the purpose of the movie. Zuck is NOT the villain of this movie and Saverin is not the victim. Life and reality are much more complex than that, as is evident in the movie, too.
