I watched "The Voice" last night because I love Cee Lo and Adam Levine. Little did I know, Cee Lo would turn my world on its head when he said "It's not about the judgment. It's about the journey." http://wp.me/p1kAA3-5l What if business leaders thought this way?

One of my favorite things about my job is the opportunity to build really rewarding relationships. I wrote about how much this aspect of my work means to me here: http://wp.me/p1kAA3-2k . How important is relationship building in your job? I'm definitely a people person but everyone's different. Do you really enjoy and cherish the relationships you develop on the job or is it just another part of the job description checklist you complete?

One of my objectives for 2011 is to really work hard at being a better communicator when I've assumed leadership roles. January's task: figure out how to best confirm that I've communicated responsibilities, deadlines, and expectations effectively. Asking open-ended questions like "What questions do you have?" and "can you paraphrase what we've just went over so I can make sure I didn't leave anything out?" have been the most effective for me. What are your techniques?

About Me

I am an Energy Advisor for a third-party contractor working with utility companies, municipalities, and state governments to implement energy conservation/efficiency measures in commercial and industrial platforms.

That's long form for: I get paid to help change the face of 'business as usual' through lowering energy costs and working smarter. It's pretty amazing.

When I'm not off saving the planet one kilowatt-hour at a time, I'm probably over at The Energy Careerist blogging up a storm about energy careers. Everything from energy efficiency technologies to leadership methods and sales skills, The Energy Careerist is a unique take on energy career guidance that you won't find anywhere else on the web.
