Rebecca Thorman Just got a note from a contact looking for recs for a new position. Here's the desc: "We're interested in hiring someone who is skilled in all things Internet marketing. We're based in the SF Bay Area & are launching a redesign for our flagship site. Sound like you? LMK.

Have the person who is looking to hire someone call me directly. This system will save them hiring an expensive marketer, and also give the employee who goes through the training a very valuable marketable skill.

Heather Conroy I'm not sure where to ask this question as there is no TED groups here (none that I can find anyhow) but in my small isolated city a TEDx has been formed and they have an upper age limit of 35 years. I find this annoying and I might just rock up anyway. But my question is am I too sensitive about being excluded? Does anyone else see problem with this policy?

Perhaps this TEDX committee could find ways of marketing the event in a way that effectively targets younger people so they wouldn't have to resort to the age restriction.Even though the intent may be not be exclusionary, the act just doesn't jive well with what TED represents.

Jay I really don't think they are yanking my chain-they seem like a well organised serious group of really nice young people. I'm with Rebecca in that I think they desire a young group so that they can share their ideas in a less intimidating environment. I appreciate that. Still I was so excited to hear that a group had been formed because I love TED. It is the sharing and discussing of the inspiring messages that
I would like to be part of instead of just watching on my computer screen. I see that like mindedness as something that might break down any age barriers. But I don't want to cause a fuss because as Roel says it might get in the way of encouraging a younger generation to attend and organise an event like TED.
I like your idea Kim- and I would like to send them a message about that. Does anyone any ideas for effectively marketing the event in a way that targets younger people?

Kelsey Balcaitis Just finished "Crush It" by Gary Vaynerchuk. I didn't find this book particularly mind-blowing or containing information that hasn't been said a million times other places. Some of his info was good, but I felt like he was just praising himself for most of the book. If you aren't familiar with social media or entrepreneurship, but have an idea you want to grow, this is the book for you. But if you have some background in social media, you might find this book a little repetitive. Anyone else?

It is very repetitive after reading so many other inspiring books on the same topic. I usually save quotes from books that inspire me but this one didn't unfortunately. I'm sure the people just discovering these types of books were enthralled. Many people didn't like Timothy Feriss' book, The 4 Hour Workweek, but the audiobook version is very convincing and inspiring.

Ritika Sanghi What are some good, high-class (Basically Cutting-Edge) IT companies to work for in London? Google has an office there, but besides that are there any top companies for software engineers/IT program managers? Any interesting and well-funded IT startups in London?

Andrea V. Lewis I want to know do prospective employers REALLY check all the references you put down? I have an interview next week and they're asking for 4-6. What types of information do they want to get out of previous managers, bosses, HR representatives, etc...

If you're talking about unemployment insurance and severance package, the latter case is better. If you're talking about what to answer during an interview, I don't think it matters as long as you're truthful. Layoffs happen, as other contributors said, but you can also choose to move onto new opportunities (P mentioned it in her answer to an earlier similar question).

Lori Dreyer Hi Penelope, I was or will be soon laid off. About 16 of us were let go and our positions outsourced to vendors. We were chosen based on our territory's not our performance. I was the 5th ranking performer..No.2 and 3 were also laid off. Should I say I was laid off? or outsourced in my cover letter? Should I even say this in my cover letter? I do mention my ranking in the ocver letter and my resume. Please advise! Thank you!!
