Harriet May Do you have the recommended 8 month emergency fund? Now that I've been on a salaried income for seven months, it's my first big savings goal. Do you treat your savings like an extra bill or do you struggle to put away money every month?

LadyBlueShame: I think that in order for me to save the amount I deem necessary, I will have to treat it like a bill :-/, which sucks because I hate bills.

After a while, you won't even miss it.My emergency fund is roughly 1 years salary. Doesn't need to be that high when starting out, but as we get raises, and homes, the risk of being laid off creates much more of a problem

Definitely opened my eyes not only on my career but on the overall career development space, massive shifts in the IT industry, etc. As for fulfillment itself, I have typically chased the more fulfilling job over the higher-paying one, but only to a point! When it comes down to weighing multiple offers against each other, eventually salary differences will potential job fulfillment for me.

Once it worked out great, and got me on my current career track. The other time it was a dead end, so I left quickly but managed to swing getting the business head as my top job reference. Now that I have kids I'm not so adventurous, but also feel like I'm in a good place in my career, so not feeling the need to take the risk anyway.

Ted Thonus What impact will cloud computing have on carriers - will customers need bigger, fatter pipes to the Internet or between offices to facilitate cloud functionality?

Consumers spend large amounts of "ramp-up" resources on getting their on-premises application to the cloud, but they never spend any resources on figuring out how to get it back. A major benefit of cloud computing is the switch-ability. If you don't like vendor A after a year, move your stuff to vendor B and give your users a new URL to point to for that application. It should be that easy. SaaS vendors never want to tell you how easy it is to move FROM them. Most consumers are still on their first SaaS vendor so they have not experienced the pain of getting their data back out of the cloud. The truth is data in the cloud, under the right circumstances, is safe enough. Convincing customers that it is is only half the battle. The other half is convincing them that the data is always theirs to take back at any time they feel it's unsafe, but providing enough excellent service that they never want to.

We can simply ...MoreI absolutely agree that is an important point and it's easily missed. And yes, we do have an easy exit in terms of just the data. We can simply create a backup of the database or create a large export. However moving it to another vendor, in our case means moving it to another application all together. This means doing a conversion of the data, which is going to be not so easy. Then you would need to train your people to use that other application and also you'd need to spend time getting the application to fit your processes or the other way around.

My point is, sure you can get your data back, but is it going to do you any good?
We have customers that do this, but they are willing to spend the money to either keep their data available in our application, or to have us support them with converting it for another application.

Matthew Bingham One day I was trying to figure out how my wife and I could be more financially responsible. Now, we are fairly responsible to begin with but there is always room for improvement. I came up with the CASH system. It stands for Clean, Arrange, Save, and Health. I kind of stole the idea from the manufacturing process of 5S. On top of all the regular budget systems (Auto deduct to savings, no cc debt, etc.), this let's you make much more educated decisions when you need/want something. MTC!

Elizabeth Raley Any suggestions on how to track resource allocation? My challenge is that developers and PMs are constantly get moved from one project to the next (not efficient, I know). But I want to track it so we can ultimately fix it!

I had to work on setting up custom fields in the system we use internally (Redmine) after rollout to accommodate the kinds of resource control you are looking for, but it can be done in a multitude of ways depending on -largely- the number of moving parts you are dealing with, and the frequency of the changes.

Troy Vollenweider First question I would like to ask the group - is the PMP certification worth spending my time and money on to acquire. I ask because I have been told about a program with Villanova University that is centered around the PMP. Some say it is great and provides networking and other opportunities and others have told me they are not sure it is worth it. I would like to get some feedback and opinions from this group on this. Thanks!

Kelsey Balcaitis Have you learned from your parents' financial mistakes? Or are you headed down the same path? For me, I think that I have inherited some of their financial issues, but I am able to recognize when that mistake has been made and been fortunate enough to correct it earlier in life.

My father is 71 so some old schoold savings rules are still in his arsenal. But, the fundamentals (don't spend a dime when you get a nickel, don't put anything on your CC if you don't have the cash to pay for it) still thrive with me to this day.
