Mark D Hiatt I have promised myself that I am going to MAKE time to pick up my Martin and strum a few bars, this week... And it's already Thursday, and the guitar is still in its case.

Mark D Hiatt Are you getting inquiries about Toyota's problems in the last weeks? I'm the office Car Guy, so I've run into a lot. I have pointed out there isn't a car made today, from the humblest Korean import to the mightiest F1 racer, that won't slow down and stop if you stand on the brakes. But I'm not sure I am convincing many. The whole thing *has* caused me to start watching Toyota stock more closely. I think about two weeks after the last late night joke might be an opportunity to get some cheap.

The brakes on a car, any car, were designed to be more powerful than the engine and are more than capable of bringing the vehicle to a stop. You can't ignore physics.

I think that there might have been a malfunction in one or two instances, but these were compounded by the operator panicking and doing the wrong thing. Most would have been operator error. Remember the Audi debacle back in the eighties? NHTSA exonerated the company completely.

I'm in a very similar position. I got my start in web development at a non-profit, and am now trying to leverage that into more freelance work. I think you've got the right idea: start by talking to people you know either personally or professionally, and see what turns up.

Pamela Selle: Thanks Mark for the really helpful comments -- I guess I do have to think like a salesman to start! I really appreciate your encouragement too.

FreelanceWritingGigs.com is a good resource, as is ProBlogger.net's job board. I actually write for FreelanceSwitch, but I haven't used the FreelanceSwitch job board as much — it tends to be more geared towards designers.

I suppose the modern analog would be a note-taking iPhone app, or something similar with any of the other Kewl-Kid phones. Ideas are thin little wispy things. Try not to ever let one get away.

Mark D Hiatt Ahhh! I'm home! I stared into that iconic eye in 1969, am still learning new skills even though I'll retire in a dozen years or so and remember "Mister Epstein" and the rumoUrs, and I was one of the people who "invented" the Internet, having worked on networked computers in the 1980s and built my first Web page in 1993.

Mark D Hiatt Hello, FunSeekers! I was training people in Dreamweaver Templates a few weeks ago when the question came up "What's Web Two-Point-Owe?" We kicked around a bunch of definitions and came down to "Dark Blue, Orange and White Pages, with Rounded Corners and Feedback". I'm still not sure....

I have read that posts should be under 400 words because of the average attention span. What grade level should the writing be targeted?

But I believe that who you are and what you write are both more important than a reading level or a word count. At least, that's what I'm hoping.
