Kyle Wahlquist I just launched a new business called Shirt Hack. We are looking for graphic designers/artists to submit work for graphic design tees. The payout is on a generous % of rev share considering the price point for the shirts we are selling. If you are interested, you can find out more at shirthack.com.

It's a nice way to gather lots of ideas without actually having to use them. Is this a standard practice ?

It ring fences my freelance writing time, and allows me to have a life too. The trick is to not take on too much and to be 100% working when you're working i.e. not checking emails, web surfing etc. Hope this helps.

It's not so much the actual freelance work, but balancing that with blogging, reading other blogs, e-mail, networking, etc. I'm trying to do as much as possible during my lunch break. There's a really nice library with private study rooms and free wifi a block from my office, so I go there and write and do as much as I can during that time. I go in with a list of specific items to accomplish so I don't waste time figuring out what to do. That's helping a lot. I think I may try the same thing at home. Set an hour time limit and sit at my desk instead of the couch or comfy chair and do a set amount of activities. Maybe something similar would work for you?

Stefanie Kelly I would love some perspective on an issue with a client. He is 43 days overdue on payment for a project. Two weeks ago, he told me that he was waiting for a cheque from his client on this project that was "in the mail". Today, he said his client is still "freeing up the funds" for him and he expects them within two weeks - at which point he will "quickly turn around a check for me". I feel though, that as my contract was with him this is irrelevent and he should still pay me on time. Thoughts?

As a consultant, on top of an initial deposit, I always use "milestones" to get paid. Specifically, this means including verbiage in the agreement/contract that you will get paid upon successful completion/submission of deliverables. Additionally, a "window" of payment terms would include Net30 (within 30 days) as an example. If the client delays the payment, a periodic (daily/weekly) surcharge is then applied to the total billing. I realize this may not help you now. But it may be handy for future projects.

I can tend towards being a pushover sometimes and having the benefit of this outside perspective definitely helped in giving me the confidence to push back with this delinquent client. I will definitely also be making use of all of the advice as to how many of you have handled contracts to avoid situations like this in the future. So far, I have received the 50% of the balance owing I requested from this client - time will tell how responsive he is at living up to the other half of the agreement. Again - thanks!

A quick search for "MySQL #1227" suggests it may be related, for example, to a phpMyAdmin setting (not using localhost, blocked IP etc).
In general using the mysql prompt over SSH is more stable than phpMyAdmin - you need some command line skills (and a hosting provider that offers SSH access).
I've also experienced that the Backup & Migrate module may perform better than PMA - it succeeded at importing a large database where PMA failed every time.

Arjan How do you convince an anti-opensource PHP programmer of the value of an opensource platform like Drupal? I myself am more of a front-end Drupal developer (basic PHP knowledge). I'm well aware of the many advantages such as secure, tested code, APIs, and of course the many readily available features of core and contrib modules. But how could I best steer the discussion in the right direction with someone who knows a lot more about coding? Your thoughts as well as links to blog posts are welcome!

I found that Drupal's hooking infrastructure was too cumbersome for increasingly elaborate web app needs (that fall outside of the Drupal idiom).

RecoveryZone.com is a patient-therapist web app with some complex needs, but I don't think it's publicly viewable yet for evaluation. Lockerz.com was build on D6 for the longest time, though the were getting killed by the load times once they crossed 250,000 members, even with 40 or 50 servers.

The real things you can bid Drupal upon are security, standards, CMS. The learning curve for coding Drupal idiomatically is said to be rather more like a cliff. I would look closely at whether it's better to use Drupal or RoR.

Mariusz here's a design horror story for you :) I've just pulled out of a web project, where the content was to be added as an afterthought. Not some minor feature or functionality - content ! Apart from nonsense like delivering visuals within 7 days from the beginning of the project (not identifying requirements, target audience, functionality, purpose, platform, developing a prototype or wireframe), not having the content to put and not even knowing what this content is supposed to be.

i've got a pretty decent contract; i feel quite nicely covered by it :) i think my biggest problem is leniency towards clients - i immediately request content from the beginning of the project, but i don't push them for it, which means some of my projects drag a bit :/ a cool way of explaining the process, this interconnection of items :)

Hey Cameron,

Being a current intern (for the second time in DC) I definitely think that there is a market, but it is going to take a lot of networking on your behalf in order to get "in" with some of the top internship programs.

It sounds like you want to set yourself up as a consultant. I'd like for similar positions to compare rates.

Good luck.

Sounds nice, but...from a user's point of view, having my company's name among stuff like Earn Pakistani, Full Software Downloads, Internet Business | Make Money and so on (the list seems to be endless) will not get me any credibility or trustworthiness. Associations in this crowd are a bit dodgy. But what do you think guys ? Would you click on any as a user ?

Danielle Dews Hi web developers. I have an idea for a web business and am looking for a developer who would be interested enough in the idea/business to partner with me. The site's customer base would be people interested in crafting (sewers, quilters, etc) and the site would include elements of both social networking and e-commerce sites. Think etsy.com (but its not a knock-off of Etsy at all). If anyone is interested in learning more (and has the skills to create such a website) let me know. thanks!
