Hi Ashley,

I enjoyed your post thoroughly about the stereotypes and misconceptions that us older people have towards the younger generations.

Those stereotypes have been used on me when I was in my 20's, or at least I felt the same frustration you feel. I think experience is what you actually experience or learn about, right? I think it is safe to say that todays young people have an opportunity to learn much more faster, and thus experience more at an earlier age. With so much interconnected now, I think this is very true.

The one thing I would like young people to harness and talk about more, is their passion and emotion! I see a passion, and a connectedness (is that a word?) with their surroundings, and the surroundings of others throughout the community that I have never seen in my generation or others. This is a very good thing! I think when people harness this passion, and this urge to do what is right for everyone on the planet, good things will happen for our planet and for the people and resources on the planet.

To all Gen Xers Yers and all others, let's focus more on what is our passion, and less about what pays the bills. If we do what we are passionate about, the bills will be paid eventually. I am just dissapointed in myself, that it has taken me so many years to understand this.

Great post, I hope to read more.

All the best,
Aaron

Angie Roach After last week's webinar with Seth Godin, I went and picked up "The Dip" and now I'm more confused than ever! I'm struggling is it a dip or a cul-de-sac when you fear that the obstacle you need to overcome to move beyond is changing the mindset of the leadership and influencers that can get you to the next level. My fear that if I don't ever change how they view what is important and give new things a try, my dip will turn into a cul-de-sac....any advice?

In some ways, we should all manage our careers that way -- doing the best job we can where we are but also being open to other better things.

Penelope Trunk Today I was helping someone apply for her dream job. I've been mentoring her for about three months now. I didn't find out til today that she is black. She said she took everything off her resume that might give it away - like, she was president of a black student organization, but she took off the black part when she wrote it in her resume. Her career counseling offfice told her to do that. I can understand why they told her that advice. I was surprised, though. What do you guys think?

Does having my picture up alter people's perceptions of my work or willingness to work with me? If it happens offline is it safe to say it happens online as well?

If that means downplaying characteristics that may inadvertently hurt your chances of gaining a “dream job”, so be it. Change can happen, but it occurs from the inside and that’s hard to do if your name hurts your chance of even getting in. @Kim I think you are bringing an honest perspective to this question. Thanks for the articles. Gen Y’s view on the race issue is a grave improvement then previous generations but the world we live in is not solely Gen Y. Institutional racism still exists and at the end of the day in order to have a chance at success you must know the rules of engagement; which might be being Roger instead of Rahj. @ Sean That is the world we are striving to live in.

If you're talking about unemployment insurance and severance package, the latter case is better. If you're talking about what to answer during an interview, I don't think it matters as long as you're truthful. Layoffs happen, as other contributors said, but you can also choose to move onto new opportunities (P mentioned it in her answer to an earlier similar question).

Lori Dreyer Thanks Maurice- Really appreciate your input...hmmm good point! I guess I just want to get in the fact that "the deadwood was not let go" I did put my ranking in my resume...as us boomers are all about that....of course so was my company at some point...Any more thoughts you have are always appreciated! Thank you!

Lori Dreyer Hi Penelope, I was or will be soon laid off. About 16 of us were let go and our positions outsourced to vendors. We were chosen based on our territory's not our performance. I was the 5th ranking performer..No.2 and 3 were also laid off. Should I say I was laid off? or outsourced in my cover letter? Should I even say this in my cover letter? I do mention my ranking in the ocver letter and my resume. Please advise! Thank you!!
