Lisa Lahey Use SEO (search engine optimization) whenever you set up a website, post a full-length blog or article etc. There are lots of free online sites to explain how to do this. A good one is http://www.sitesubmit.ca/index.php. Make sure you include misspelled words in the tags for your site/blog (seriously) so ppl who cannot spell can find you. Here is a site that lists several search engines where you can register your URL to increase traffic to your site/blog/etc. http://freewebsubmission.com/

Lisa Lahey Good advice about being careful what you tweet. There are lots of articles out there about that. Pictures are very important too. Companies search for new candidates all the time using social media as we all know by now and foolish tweets and pics may be the end of your recruitment prospects.

Lisa Lahey A little extra pocket money is easy to get if you like being a VA (virtual assistant). You need MS office skills, Skype, office equipment (usually provided for you) self-discipline and be able to take directions. It's a great way to be a support person without going into an office.

Maureen Mascaro: Hi Lisa - Can you recommend any specific websites someone should go to if they are interested in doing this? Are you currently a VA or know one?

Lisa Lahey Hi. Check under events today. Monday March 22 2010 is National Job Swap Day and you get to swap jobs with a colleague, friend, virtual acquaintance etc. Get swapping and tell me how it went!

Lisa Lahey National Job Swap Day is on Monday March 22 2010. It can be a virtual or actual swap. Find a partner/s and get swapping. To that end make sure if you swap in person you are dressed appropriately for the job....ask your friend/social media acquaintance what to wear...you don't want to embarrass yourself dressing inappropriately...of course if your friend is a stripper you don't have to wear too much..its only coming off soon anyway haha good luck

Lisa Lahey Steve Harrison has a blog I've joined. He tosses out little gems and asks you to think about how they could relate to you so you can blog about them. April 15 as American tax day seemed a bit of a stretch for me until I remembered that in my new novel "Millicent Carlisle" (PublishAmerica 2010) taxes were an integral part of a piece of plot development. Weird. You never know eh?

There seems to be a genetic link between creativity and mental illnes. It is likely very true that many writers, poets, authors, artists, musicians, etc are more depressed then than your average joe on the street.

Mehul Kar I'm a student, so I guess you could say I'm a professional in the field of education. Here's what i've learned in the past 3 years at college: it's not a good system: http://thoughtsuncited.wordpress.com/2009/11/25/education/

Congratulations for a well-written paper. Is this perspective part of a thesis? There were a number of points I agreed with but also a number of points where I strongly disagree. That education is in dire need of reform is unmistakeable. In the Ontario elementary system there is one academic system only and anyone who falls well below that is placed onto an IEP or Individual Education Plan. Since I worked in the Special Education office for 2 years I can tell you exactly how we design an individual plan: if a child is in grade 3 we simply take the requirements from the gr 2 curriculumm he or she was unable to master the year before and this becomes the gr 3 curriculum and evaluation criteria. That doesn't cut it to me. By high school however there is a two-tiered system whereby children can enroll in both academic and applied levels of learning, the applied being for children who would normally be placed on IEPs. There are still IEPs however in high school so I can only assume that there are children who struggle with the applied level as well.
We had what I feel is a disturbing development in Toronto (my home city). A black school for black students only was opened three years ago and I felt that was a mistake. The community felt it was needed since minorities are so overlooked in the Ontario curriculum and I have to agree with that much. But anything that separates one race from another smacks of segregation to me and that's just treading on thin ice. What we need is curriculum reform on so many levels.
Having said all that (man can I talk) I don't think the entire education system "lacks total knowledge." For one thing schools do not applaud those who work the hardest necessarily. They commend those who who are the smartest (consider Honour Rolls for students with straight A's). That leaves out a sizeable student population who are trying their hardest for commendations.
Evaluation and grading is measured very differently in elementary school than just tests. There are individual and group projects, participation, attitude, attendance, and observation of whether or not a student is using learned methods to achieve an answer, be it right or wrong. The answer itself may be marked as wrong but the means to get there still gets points.
In Ontario high school there is a grade 10 literacy test which is standard. Everyone who takes it has to pass or they cannot proceed to grade 11.
That was a great review! I enjoyed it!

Chris(tina) Brady I answered an ad for a co-writer of a non-fiction book yesterday and received a call from the writer last night. The person gave me the name of the publisher with whom he says he already has a book deal, and he told me about his education and things like that. But his grammar and spelling is terrible! I want to believe this is a legit opportunity, but I can't help wondering if the circumstances and money are too good to be true. How can I check that this is a legit offer?
