Has anyone here attended a creative writing program, or known anyone who has? I'm looking at MFA options, and was wondering if anyone has tips on what to watch out for.

It was interesting to see that programs ranking high for fiction or poetry were ranked lower for non-fiction and vice versa. Good to know, since I want to pursue non-fiction. 131 weeks ago

Although, I stumbled across "Book in a Month" by Victoria Lynn Schmidt, which seems the ideal companion to NaNoWriMo. So, I'm going to try out the idea, on a different month :-) You? 131 weeks ago

I don't think the idea of writing 50,000 in one month could work for me anyways. I'm too picky. 131 weeks ago

Part of me is scared of this group. My creative writing workshops in college involved a lot of "artistry"--otherwise known as an inability to spell, characters who stared at stuff and didn't do a whole lot else, abortive research of dubious origin, and tantrums. If we can avoid that, this group should be golden.

(Seriously, one girl insisted that she had researched that kitschy musical genre "rockability," and she went ballistic when I told her that the name was rockabilly.) Anyways, many of the exercises were designed to make you reexamine your previous work, revamping one element at a time. I'll see if I can't dig around and find some of my old papers. 131 weeks ago

Still though I try to be as wide ranging as I can be within that framework. I try to think of uncommon angles and unique viewpoints. Maybe being a little bit of a boat rocker now and then with the status quo. I am starting a new blog soon though, which will be more general, but a greater challenge. 131 weeks ago
