Cary Thomson Hi All This will probably seem like it has a incredibly obvious answer but is it essential or even advantageous to speak French to work in Toronto? Right now there's a chance we could move there if the other half gets into school at U of T and being from Scotland I have no experience of Toronto culture. Thanks

The other half is looking into distance ed courses right now - weirdly an online masters from Australian could be an option.

However if you're looking for work in Government, it helps. And if you're on the West Coast, languages like Punjabi and Mandarin can give you a leg up :)

Ryan Paugh Just read in the NYT this morning (http://nyti.ms/bBnLMZ) that 27 states have adopted the new national education standards policy. I'm worried because I feel like these new standards policies are too focused on fundamentals and ignoring the skills that are becoming more important for success like computer skills. I'm not involved enough in education to know whether I am right or wrong, but based on the things I have read I'm a little concerned. You guys are the experts, what are you thinking?

In these economic times, with budgets being slashed, we have to consider how many students are actually served under any given program.

Yes this is getting long winded and off track, so it's best to move it elsewhere.

Is it by standardized testing to measure the results of accomplishing this? I feel that is something yet to be seen. My personal belief, the whole dang education system needs a rest & overhaul (and our culture vaule education more than it does)!! The question I ask, does the same fundamentals from 30 years ago that were great building blocks apply to today's world? My thoughts are probably not. Definately the teaching styles probably need to be changed as well.

Lindsey Anderson Help me out - Trying to decide if I should make my own website for freelance writing/voice work. Has the website really replaced the website? Are employers really looking for me or should I still be looking for them, resume and cover letter in hand? What do you think?

Sarah Hofmann: I would! Use it to supplement info on your resume. Add a link on your resume and business card, and show them examples of your work.

Not sure what you mean when you ask "has the website replaced the website?". I'm assuming this is a typo?
Creative jobs have a little more wiggle room when it comes to submitting a resume, but I wouldn't be caught without one. You need to be proactive in your job search, don't wait for someone to come to you.

Lindsey Anderson How on earth do people go about inventing things?! You people reading this are smart... I have an idea and no clue what to do with it!

Then find someone who can help you make a working model. From there I would imagine you seek out a patent.

Lindsey Anderson How do you handle a co-worker who is literally OBSESSED with Facebook? We have a small workplace (five people including the boss) and she spends every.waking.second she can on FB. And when she isn't on FB, she is talking about something she saw on FB. Oh, and she leaves comments on my wall WHILE I AM STANDING NEXT TO HER!

TOP IDEA: Lindsey Anderson I think it's time to admit that I am a grown up and still don't know what I want to be. My plans for "trophy wife" have not worked as planned. Argh.

Ryan Paugh Are hiring managers going too far with reference checks? I just read an article on MSNBC that blew me away (http://bit.ly/qwHU0). It's no surprise that they're referencing Facebook and LinkedIn pages, but calling unauthorized references seems nuts! What do you guys think? Are there any ethical considerations that should be made when doing a reference check?

And as far as the internet goes, make sure you're careful with your use of FB and other social networking sites - you don't want that picture of some drunk guy motorboating you to come back to haunt you so don't put it on facebook!

Where organizations short-cut is they don't give the person the opportunity to explain a bad reference. But when you're dealing with 75 resumes for one position... I think the bottom line is people need to manage their social networks.
