Austin Frogge So why aren’t students involved in the education reform process? The input of the most important stakeholder is almost always left out; it baffles me. Anyone ever feel the same way? I recently co-founded a venture to better understand what students want to see out of their education system, what they want improved. Take a look at the site and let me know what you think. It will be evolving as we get more input into what the students want it to be. www.CrayonstoDiplomas.com. Look forward to it!

This is an interesting point. Is there possibly a tipping point, though with US students? I think the increases in the UK were much more immense than our incremental increases in the states. Complacency is definitely rampant but is that due to the students or the system? I have my own theories : ) but I love hearing others.

And honestly, I feel that Americans are really bad at establishing boundaries (ie: the federal government is continuously enacting laws that limit personal freedoms on specific demographics like anti-abortion regulations target women and low-income families). But people either don't know or don't care enough to really fight back. And that's how I feel about college. It's a sheep mentality - my friend graduated with 50,000 in loan debt from his ivy league school, and he's doing okay! There's also the issue of "dream stories" which are anecdotes of genius/super talented high school students getting full scholarships, or getting accepted into a prestigious program for next to nothing which isn't a reality for a lot of high school and college students. The reality is that you go to school, pay or get left behind; a lot of people don't believe in "dream stories" because they only seem to happen to a chosen few.

Sara Gallagher I work at a private college, and a huge challenge we face is that our faculty are not educators by training. They have often spent the last 20 years working in a particular industry or technical field, making them subject-area experts but occasionally lousy teachers. I wonder what kind of training resources are available to people who are trying to leverage their experience to enter the field of education? Have you ever had or known a teacher who was very knowledgeable but not a good educator?

I teach in a public tech college. We are required to take education classes to maintain our certification. Our college also has a strong "Peer Support" program. I have always been drawn to teaching and really love it so I really try to create an engaging experience and structure class exercises appropriate to the topic and student needs. In college, I HATED the instructors who had no real-world experience. When I came to teach full-time I lost that connection to clients and projects that I thought were so valuable to my students. It's interesting to hear so many people feel that teaching skills are just as important as knowledge. Interestingly, in my first semester in the Peer Support program, they told us the following fact. Nearly 100% of complaints about teachers involve teaching methods. Nearly 0% complain that the teacher is not knowledgeable. What's the solution? I am not sure. Maybe encourage students to speak up more... submit ratings to RateMyProfessor.com.

We took them as we were teaching our first courses, so we could go in and discuss what was happening in our classrooms and get feedback.

Like David, I've been required to take continuing education courses to help. I've found many of those to be simple rehashes of each other.

What I have found to be helpful is attending conferences. When you get people of like disciplines together, that is where the ideas really start to flow. I've learned some of my best classroom techniques and the best coping techniques.

Sabera (Kapasi) Photographer I moved to the US a year ago from India and have been doing a whole lot of shopping to update my wardrobe to suit the weather here. With much apprehension, I walked into a Clothes Mentor the other day and was surprised with the clothes I found after some patient digging into the racks! Picked up a beautiful Guess top for just $6. Also bought a killer Liz Claiborne pencil skirt for $15! How many of you shop from 2nd-hand stores? Do you tell your friends you're wearing something that's 2nd hand?

@Greg

I don't see any "numbers". If I were going to hire you, I'd be looking for 1) percentage increase in sales / revenue driven 2) Amount of revenue under your management or revenue that you drove. Basically - looking for some more quantifiers under each job. I don't care so much "what you did" (responsibilities), but I do care how good you were at it ( ;

Also, in the summary section, I would make yourself more 'sales' oriented; for example, add "revenue driver" (or something like that) to your list of specialties.

Also, in your list under the summary, you have "project manager" first. It doesn't make sense to me if you're looking for sales jobs to have "pm" first; I would put it last and put anything pertaining to sales first.

Tariq West What does "starving college student" mean? It's a recurring motif in American culture, but I've never quite understood it. I understand that it reflects some realities around the struggles that college students face, but there's more to it than that. Among other things, it's seems to be about the experience of privilege in parental households and the contrast between that and some college experiences. To be a "starving college student" did you have to be a well-fed, pampered high-school student?

Are you on Facebook? In the meantime, check out my friend Bill's school, Austin Polytech. It's an at-risk, low income demo, but they have done amazing things! Obama coined it as his example for what he felt secondary schools should be. The other amazing thing about Bill, he and a mentor of mine helped bring the Gate's foundation into Chicago school's. Scott Keegan Great blog post on interviewing the interviewer - http://goo.gl/2oW3. There is an excellent run-down of the sort of questions you should be asking during your interview to determine if the company and the team you'll be joining is right for you. I've followed a similar process myself lately and can attest that it is a very useful technique.

Most people want to see what you've achieved before worrying about your grades.

Secondly, as much as a pain as it can be, you do need to tailor your CV for each role, and in your case, each sub-section of your industry areas. I have several versions of my CV that match different areas of IT I have experience in and I tailor them for each role I apply for, but once you have a strong CV in each area the tailoring is really just a bit of tweaking.

One other tip I've often given my team's over the years is to make a list of everything you've achieved. That helps with reviews, but when you're searching for a new role it gives you a great pick-list of things to put on your CV. Just make sure they're achievement oriented rather than task oriented and you'll be good to go.

L. E.: Thank you for your sincere advice! I really like the idea of creating an achievement's list.

John Mattucci Right now I am having to deal with a boss with obvious mental issues. It's with a small company, and he is the sole proprietor. On top of his OCD and Bi-Polar issues I've had to deal with, he has a domination/power complex over employees (I find most sole proprietors business owners have). How do I navigate his metal problems so that I don't get fired for walking in on the wrong foot? Is playing his game the best way to go? He probably does not control over his mental issues. Same boat anyone?

While I've never worked under your exact circumstances, ...MoreJohn, I want to acknowledge your tough position. It is an energy drain, to say the least. While I've never worked under your exact circumstances, I have some general thoughts based on previous experience.

1) Make a simple pro-con list about your role AND the company. Are you there because you LOVE your job AND the company? Is the job just okay, but the product the company creates saves lives? The first step is to clearly understand why you are working there. If it is solely for a paycheck (you will not get unemployment if you quit), start looking for a new job now!

2) Don't commiserate with your co-workers on the situation. While they may be the only ones who truly understand your situation, it exacerbates the work conditions. The old saying is true, misery loves company.

3) The only thing you can control is your reaction. Sometimes we become mirrors to others. For example, if someone approaches you with a smile and compliment, you will respond in the same manner. While an approach of accusation may cause a response of rebuttal or defense - usually in a louder tone. Sometimes those who are in a position of power, like to show it by belittling those around them. Control your response and don't engage at same level. The technique Elizabeth suggested is perfect -- remember to keep your tone and body-language in check. It's not just what you say, but how you say it!

Good luck! Keep us posted.

In my own experience most of the students that I took classes with in college have taken at least one online course at some point. I myself have taken a few online courses to fulfill credit requirements that I would not have been able to through traditional means due to my own constraints. I think that many online learners have a shared background: often working full time and taking care of life's responsibilities while seizing the opportunity to continue their studies and accomplish their academic goals. I see the point in statements about online classes can't replace the experience of classroom classes, but for some people, they just have to.

However, having looked into online degrees (sic. University of Phoenix and Western Governor's University) I have to say that the stigma of online learning and the actual crappy quality of the education seems to outweigh any potential cost benefit.

Bottom line? Higher Education should be as near free as possible, like they do it in Scandinavia and England.
