John Mattucci Ok so I don't know what other Group to post this in, but I need some advice about using Linkedin. How appropriate is it to reach out to people to be introduced or send an inMail (if you have it) ? I want to send a message to a user who used to work for a company I like, and I'd like to ask him who should contact from his old company. Would that be appropriate?

Hi Francesca,

I agree with Edward and Linda about using a different format. You will need at some point to email a copy to someone instead of sending a link to the indeed page, and you'll want to be able to control what it will look like when it's printed out.

Second, I would remove the link to your blog at the bottom because it's too personal. The top-most entry is full of things I would never want a potential hire-er to read about me. If you want to have a blog to add to your professional skills, create a separate one that has something to do with the industry you are applying for.

Third, I would recommend sending Linda an email and get her advice!

Leena Chugh I find myself jumping from screening resumes to checking email to online networking just so often that I'm beginning to think-could it be ADD? Is anybody else in the same boat? Time management is my biggest challenge right now. I made a schedule and can't stick to it. The resumes come in my email so I can't close my email. A candidate calls and I do have to leave everything and take the call. Then there are the admin tasks. I think I can do better. How do you manage your 8 hours?

Let go of yourself a little bit and allow yourself to be more flexible in your approach to planning your day. Jamie Nacht Farrell I'm always told I should have a "vision" for myself. Yet, I never have and it's led me to success - both professionally and personally. Is it necessary to have a "vision" of what you want in life? If so, does that vision have to include business and personal? I do take them when they are the actual recruiter or hiring manager. I ignore the rest. With the salary positions, I always take those calls because I've been able to refer them to contacts who would be interested.

I refuse calls from the rest when they use a call center or calling service. I will only talk to someone if they are actually from the company or high level. I just don't have time to deal with some 18 yrs old reading from a script.

It's pretty sad but a large private financial firm tried to recruit me last week and they used a calling service. I asked two questions and the caller said that I knew more about that firm than she does. All she had was 3 sentences and 15 questions to ask on a sheet. Needless to say, my view about the quality of management at that firm just went down the drain.

TOP IDEA: Robin Mills Is too much passion a bad thing? I have been accused of being too "emotionally involved" with the outcomes of situations (i.e. projects) that occur at work. I think being passionate can be a double-edged sword - being passionate allows me to give 300% of myself to my work and my client's needs, and can sometimes give me that extra creative push to get things done. On the other hand, sometimes I care too much about what happens, which can cloud my judgment. So - can passion be negative?

I watched a show on the Discovery Channel about a tribe in Africa, where the men wear make up and compete in a kind of beauty contest in front of the women. And in that culture, this is the accepted norm - men are "told" this is what they should do.

Why do men in our culture wear ties as part of business attire? Same reason... it's an accepted norm (despite the fact that a tie is functionally useless).
