What if the reason cited for you *not* getting the job is something that is untrue or was never asked to be expanded upon? Someone just posed this situation to me. The job was not offered because of something that was very briefly discussed, but never elaborated. So when this reason was cited , it was a huge surprise.
Do you try to explain yourself on the phone while trying not to sound like a child? Or do you just let it go?

The reason given was a clear lie, as they never asked for that information, and would not have had me go through the application process if that were the real reason. I was also told at the start of the application process that I was a "good candidate".
My response: You don't want me. I can't fix that. Good bye. There's no percentage in petitioning people who (a) don't want you, and (b) are willing to lie about it. There's no percentage in trying to get them to tell the truth, either, as you can't.
Truly offensive part: It was a law organization, which should know better. Clearly they were CYA.
