Dana Leavy A conversation with a friend of mine who was let go from her job this week inspired a new idea for an article/discussion - How to explain in an interview that you've been fired or let go, and still position yourself as a desirable candidate. It's all about being able to steer the conversation back to your most marketable attributes and skills. Has anyone else had to handle that conversation in an interview? If they don't, any attempts to reframe a firing is just going to convince them that either you have no grasp of reality, or you don't care what consequences your actions cause.

I find that I now shoot to catch up on my favorite blogs/commenting twice a week, and I also post my own twice a week. it's not as often as I would like, but it seems to allow me to hit the sweet spot of frequency and quality, which always seems to be at odds with each other.

I also use a color coded system which I keep by hand (for some reason, my brain remembers things better when I write them out by hand) ... gorgeous crayola markers and Curious George stickers make it extra fun!

When I think about "work/life balance," for example, a slightly tired buzz phrase, I tend to imagine continuously adding and subtracting weight-- an active process, not passively waiting for one arm to drop lower. Know what I mean? Fulfillment or satisfaction being the end goal.

What's more, "balance" will be different for different people. My fulfilling mix of personal, work, and alone time might seem unusual, but it's the mix I have to keep juggling.

Hmm. Juggling is a better metaphor, maybe?

Thanks Everyone this has been helpful.

Philip - to answer your questions my role has been fairly undefined because I have had 3 different job titles in the past year and a half. A month after I started at my company we reorganized and I went from a Membership Coordinator to the Special Projects and Administration Specialist, now I'm slowly transitioning into the Marketing and Communications Manager. Part of the issue is that there isn't a lot of institutional knowledge among the newer employees.

Jay - I think what you outlined will work in my office
Rebecca - Thanks! I totally get that - I just want to make sure I'm able to fully transition into my new role and actually have the time to devote to it, rather than getting stuck in the admin minutia.

Elizabeth,

You might consider defining your duties and vetting them with your boss. Explain (politely yet firmly) to others that you consider yourself professional and that they, too, also want to be respected as professionals. Rebecca makes point about duties being shared. In the old days when I had two assistants in my unit they did all the gopher work. That was their job. However, that was then; this is now, where organizations have greatly reduced support staff and where "professionals" have taken on more and more admin-related tasks, such as photocopying and doing their own typing and slide presentations.

So stand your ground, but equip yourself first so that your co-workers understand from where you're coming.

I do understand that some people keep their FB page/profile as private as possible. And you right it might seem "spammy" if you flood your friends with likes that you dont actually like and fans update that you are not actually a fan of.

But I also understand that some of us here use our own personal pages for both personal and professional interaction.

After all, the tribes that we build can actually start from the people that we actually know. Take for example, when your close friend or friend within your network knows that you have your own ad agency, isnt it but natural for them to refer people to you? A source of recommendations? That could be very beneficial for your business. You should start out with your own circle if you want to succeed.

Rebecca Thorman I love when people quote and link to my blog, but I find myself getting frustrated when people take large pieces of my post and include it in their post, even with attribution. I just feel like the blogger is being lazy and can't come up with their own analysis, so they just copy and paste. Also, I think Gen Y'ers may be more interested in the field (regardless of job availability) because we've been brought up under the pressure of "having to live with the mistakes of the past" and when the social relevance became more socially relevant, we were coming into the age(s) where we decide on a direction for our career.
