I asked 10 firms (5 large, 5 small) what they thought. In architecture, everyone sends in a resume and a portfolio, so my resume shouldn't be longer than one page unless I've got 10 years experience.

First of all, you don't have a page, you have a third of a page. Thats the part that shows on my screen when I click on the .doc file you sent me. Most people waste two thirds of it with a big address line and an objective that says "to use my people skills in a job that will challenge me... "

You have one third of a page to make me read more. In that one third of a page, you have to tell me who you are. If you succeed, I'll read. I'll read a page, I'll read two or three pages. In fact, I think because people work so hard to make the format look professional, on a one page resume there's so little content in there that it looks awfully pathetic. Sorta like a big white plate in a French restaurant with a 3 oz steak in the middle by itself.

I have about 20 years experience, so my resume is longer - but I also have a half-page of keywords for hits on searches. Don't want them to appear on the print version? Reformat your keywords to 4-point white font.

Hiring managers don't print the majority of the resumes they receive. They print the ones they already like from what they've seen on their computer.

Dan Canedo Hello everyone. I'm new to BrazenCareerist. I'm searching for a new job and would love some feedback on my resume. I'm considerating a career change from law to business, but all my work experience has been focused on law as opposed to marketing/business positions, so I'm wondering how I can effectively present my abilities. Otherwise, business is a dog eat dog world. If you have space leftover, sure add it for some color and flavor. But chances are you need that space to sell your business skills. On that note, I'm less than lukewarm on the affiliations...

You have a Master and a JD. I assume you're not looking at entry level business positions. I assume you're looking at manager levels. I assume you may even be looking at a 100K type opportunities. Your resume is seriously lacking ACCOMPLISHMENTS. At this level, people could care less what you think you could transfer as far as skills. What have you actually done, and maybe you could do the same here.

Now understanding that you're changing fields, but that doesn't mean that accomplishments are not transferable. Have you successfully negotiated for someone? Have you successfully grew your client base? Have you successfully managed an office? I would suggest that you go find yourself some job description of what you are looking to get into. Make your resume look like that without lying. Include results. NUMBERS. Grew client base by X%. That's business talk. If you want to be one of us, you gotta talk like us :)

I actually reformatted my resume and it's now on my BC profile and I think I've fixed the spacing issue. I do think that I still need to touch it up more and list more accomplishments as you suggested, Jeannie. However, I am open to entry-level if that is what will be necessary for the transition.

Thanks again everyone.

Kristen Fischer: Absolutely...but beware of SOME critiques because they are just a LURE to buy the service and are NOT very personalized. Just my .02.

Her comments were right on about the preparation, the objective thinking and how it's written are worth the investment. Here's the link to that article: http://jobjournal.com/article_full_text.asp?artid=2951.

While I am a professional resume writer, I have to agree with Kristen that many services do a bait and switch and don't provide the goods. I've worked with some. However, I make sure that when I speak to prospective clients I ask probing questions to create a very personalized resume that isn't a clone. I am passionate about helping people get a good resume that fits their need and aids their job search. I cannot say this for all resume services, I can only speak for myself. I recommend asking probing questions about what it offered, if they offer free critiques or reviews, what you get for the money paid. Prices are often based upon what a person needs, so that may not be presented until you have talked with the writer and/or sent a copy of your resume for review. Keep in mind, you can always say NO even if you've talked at length to the prospective writer.

Good luck!

I agree with Vickie, guest blog posts are really powerful.

I'd also research other books and authors within your vertical. In my experience, authors are always willing to help other authors. Then, crank out your keyword search skills and research which blogs/websites are ranking for "keyword + book + reviews." Make a list, come up with a pitch and go from there.

Do not be afraid to tap into your local market either for a little review/publicity help. That includes your alma mater, local newspapers, bookstores, etc. Sometimes, you can see a good boost in visibility/sales that way.
