Monica O'Brien Hi everyone! We read about how traditional media outlets are struggling to sell ads and digital media is the new way to reach your audience. My question is: What is the biggest challenge you face with marketing your products or services online right now?

There seem to be 2 major challenges: 1- sloppy planning- people think that on-line marketing has different rules to traditional planning. It still requires great ideas, excellent execution, relevant content...In fact probalbly more than ever, because opting out is really a click away
2: marketers not truly comminiting to getting this right. On-line needs longer term planning to stretch the idea out over time & resource to keep a high qual chatter going

TOP IDEA: Kate Hutchinson I work for a small startup and the head of a medium sized startup has started hassling me. We both offer similar services (but distinct ones), and this guy is super aggressive. He taunts me on Twitter, and when proposing a "partnership" told me that I (CMO) was not important enough to talk to, want to see the CEO. Have you ever encourntered this kind of hositlity? How did you deal?

There are 100s of partners I have worked with over the years who are ego maniacs and have acted like the one you've described. For the betterment of the business (especially a start up business), we sometimes need to check our egos at the door and try to work together. If, after beginning to work together, he does not change - sure - ignore him and end the relationship. However, many times we find that once we get to know someone a bit better and we start working together, people change.

Elisabeth Ericson This week I landed my first web design client. It's something I've wanted to do for years but never had the confidence for. I'm working on my own redesign now, but in the meantime, any advice for someone just starting out?

This is all so helpful; thanks everyone.

I have one year left of college, so most expenses are covered for now (by a combination of loans, financial aid, and part-time jobs). My internship experience has been in marketing/communications with some tech-y aspects, but unpaid at nonprofits. So at this point I am very much still building my portfolio.

With this client, I offered to do her site for free to get the piece for my portfolio. It's not a hugely complicated project, but I'm wholly self-taught on an "as-needed" basis, so there are many things (e.g. PHP, Javascript) I'll need to learn in a less haphazard way before I feel comfortable charging real designer rates. I am saving all of your advice in a document for when that day comes... thanks again!

My biggest advice when starting out (or at any point) is don't sacrifice quality - treat every site as if it was your own.

Beyond that, plan, plan, and plan some more. Create an agreement with the client and make sure you both sign it. With the agreement, factor in time for approvals and make it as clear as possible without being aggressive that once something is approved, making changes may require additional money. The one thing I have found in my limited experience is clients like to make one change here and there and they QUICKLY add up.

Good luck!

Gauri Nawathe What do you guys think of Facebook Connect? Would you advice a brand to use it? What if FB became obsolete in a few years?

If and when any of them become obsolete, is because something better/more popular would have replaced it. I wouldn't build a business based on those, but I would offer them as options.

Lorena I'm updating my resume... How do you guys include your freelance work along with your staff job work? I want to showcase my freelance work to employers, but I'm not sure how to "fit it in" to the resume mold format (as far as dates, location, employer goes) Thoughts?

I've seen freelance writers go by names like "marketing consultant" or "copywriting specialist." Granted, if you're applying for freelance writing jobs, "freelance writer" is probably a more fitting job title.

Kevin Garcia I'm really glad to see a resurgence in letterpress work recently. Looks like a lot of enthusiasts are picking up the art again.
