I'm a Masters of Journalism student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C.
I received my Bachelor of Journalism degree in June 2010 from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. I graduated at the top of my class, winning the Medal in Journalism for having the highest GPA in my program.
During my time at TRU, I worked for two different newspapers – the 100 Mile Free Press and Metro News Edmonton – and freelanced articles with several others. After graduation, I worked at Kamloops This Week.
In these jobs, I've done a variety of different stories from crime to event advancers, and just about everything in between. While at the 100 Mile Free Press, I also took most of my own photographs.
In my masters, I've had the opportunity to further develop my social media and multimedia skills. In my classes, I've learned to work across platforms, gaining experience with radio, multimedia and T.V. in addition to rounding out my print background.
I'm specializing in popular culture and technology.
Since beginning grad school, I've been published on TheThunderbird.ca, where I've submitted mutlimedia work, and the National Post, which I covered the Great Candian Appathon for.
I'm an avid photographer and social media enthusiast.
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to cover the University of British Columbia segment of the Great Canadian Appathon for the Financial Post/National Post.
Over the course of the 48-hour event (a coast-to-coast mobile game developing marathon), I interviewed organizers and participants, wrote three stories, shot photos and recorded video clips. I also updated Twitter followers on event happenings using the event hashtag #GCA2011. Official hashtag tweets were collected and showcased on a Financial Post Tech Desk live chat.
It was great to utilize social media and multimedia as well as written work in covering such a dynamic technology event.
I wrote stories for different sections of the paper, including the Front Page, Entertainment, Sports, New Homes and community news. I had the opportunity to interview local political figures as well as notable entertainment icons, such as Bif Naked.
Kamloops This Week, a Black Press newspaper that publishes twice weekly in Kamloops, B.C. and maintains a news website. Chris Foulds, my editor at KTW, encouraged me to explore creativity in my writing in order to craft accurate news stories that generated community interest.
I returned to the 100 Mile Free Press over the holidays as a relief reporter. While there, I composed stories on community news and issues, which included interviews with both the mayor of the District of 100 Mile House and Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett.

As an intern, I wrote stories, advancers and briefs for the Edmonton edition of Metro News. In order to do this, I attended a variety of city events such as press conferences held by the mayor, police department and various educational institutions.
Metro News, as a commuter daily, has a very large focus on brevity. Working there taught me to write short, clear and concise articles that still get to the heart of the story.
I wrote stories and shot photos. My pieces encompassed a wide variety of topics, including features, events, sports, travel, health and other community issues. I received several front-page stories in addition to numerous bylines and photo credits.
