Kelsey Balcaitis PS. Anyone use GoodReads.com? I highly recommend it! It's like a Netflix queue, but for your books.

Kelsey Balcaitis To learn more about the political issues that could impact credit unions and their members check out http://www.cuna.org/. Some specific issues to look at include Member Business Lending, which would allow credit unions to lend more money to small business owners, especially those who may have been turned down by banks, also proposed Interchange amendments that would only cost members more money. What are your thoughts?

Kelsey Balcaitis Just finished "Crush It" by Gary Vaynerchuk. I didn't find this book particularly mind-blowing or containing information that hasn't been said a million times other places. Some of his info was good, but I felt like he was just praising himself for most of the book. If you aren't familiar with social media or entrepreneurship, but have an idea you want to grow, this is the book for you. But if you have some background in social media, you might find this book a little repetitive. Anyone else?

It is very repetitive after reading so many other inspiring books on the same topic. I usually save quotes from books that inspire me but this one didn't unfortunately. I'm sure the people just discovering these types of books were enthralled. Many people didn't like Timothy Feriss' book, The 4 Hour Workweek, but the audiobook version is very convincing and inspiring.

Kelsey Balcaitis Anyone read "Googled" by Ken Auletta? I am just about finished and found the book extremely interesting. It talks a lot about how Google disrupted "the way things were" and how they have forced competitors to change too. Part of me saw a potential danger in one company controlling so much, but the other part of me agrees that Google is pointing out inefficiencies that need to be changed for the consumer. I was also able to relate it to the industry I work in and how we are slow to change.

Kelsey Balcaitis From the NYT: Article on FB Ads and how odd some of them are. I agree with most of the article, some of the ads are just weird- like the baby ones, and some are misleading- like the "try a free iPad" ones. The article talks about people who wonder if their information is being used appropriately. It'll be interesting to see if FB cracks down on these types of ads. I doubt they will, they make a lot of money from their ads. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/04/technology/04facebook.html?th&emc=th

Rebecca Thorman Saw this and thought of you, Kelsey - Banking on Gen-Y According to a survey performed by Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group, banks can expect to see long-term revenue gains of up to 10% by engaging Gen-Y consumers in social media. The report found that Gen-Y, while not yet major earners, is very trusting of financial institutions that offer professional financial advice. This broke from the researchers' expectations of low trust levels because of the recent banking troubles.

Most Gen Y'ers don't know what a credit union is and most credit unions lack the higher tech programs for things like online and mobile banking. This will be key in getting Gen Y in the door. Thanks!

I'm curious, would you be interested in learning (via different social media tools- FB, Twitter, blogs, etc.) about political issues that would affect financial service offerings, whether for a bank or credit union? Or would that turn you off from the company? Appreciate any comments you would have.

Trouble with financial and political news is that (1) there is tooooooo much of it and (2) it's boring to read (maybe because 99% of it is irrelevant and the articles are too long).
I might follow if someone was just tweeting interesting tidbits, or sending me updates. I just wouldn't want the social media to just direct me to the long articles that I already hate reading.

I mean, I get it - when I was hiring people, I always looked at their profiles, so it stands to reason that other industries will do that too - but as I see that happening, it's easier to see the negative implications.
