Rebecca Thorman I want to learn PHP, AJAX and how to build a CMS. How do I go about it? While I am familiar with code from my blog, I would like links to straight-up beginner resources. How do I set up a coding environment on my computer? What are the best tutorials and resources or even classes available on the web? Thanks in advance...

I am using XAMPP as well, but only because the group recommended it and it ended up being easier than what the book suggested. I think the book is great and is very easy and clear - plus, there are lots of great online resources that align with each chapter. For me, I like being able to mark up the book as well. Hope that helps! After the Head First book, I also have a book called PHP and MySql for Web Devlelopment which is part of the Web Developers series. It looks pretty good, but certainly more advanced than the Head First book I'm doing now.

Rebecca,

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but how has the experience of learning PHP & MySQL been treating you?

Once you've gotten some experience with the basics, I'd recommend using that experience in a true LAMP stack.

There are 2 easy (easier...) ways to move in that direction:
- virtualize a LAMP server locally (using VirtualBox, Parallels, etc.), or
- set up a virtualized server through RackSpace, AWS, or similar.

If you're planning to stick with it, it is important to break away from the Windows-based stack. Linux-based stacks tend to be more performant and robust, and don't suffer with the issues inherent in the Windows-targeted implementation of PHP. It is very likely that any professional opportunities that you'll encounter will require LAMP experience over X/WAMP experience.

Heather Gaona I'm just returning to Civilian life after 8 years in the Army... and need help with the clothes! I was fashion-challenged before wearing a uniform every day. I work in a lab, so practical clothing is a must. At some point in any day I could be crawling under an instrument or climbing a step ladder. Jeans are widely accepted, but I worry I’ll look unprofessional. My biggest challenge is tops: I tend to prefer tshirts. I welcome your suggestions!

GoDaddy just didn't do it for me as far as hosting was concerned.

If you want a recommendation, I moved my sites to a Baby Plan on HostGator and I'm quite happy with it. It's much more flexible than my previous GoDaddy hosting and cheaper. It does add-on domains and supports a lot of popular software like Wordpress and Drupal.

Dana Leavy I often hear from people about different side ventures they've started in addition to their full time jobs as financial safety nets. It's hard to trust in the "stability" of a full time job anymore. Here is a question for a blog post:
What are the different ways the recruiters focus? I can take a guess based on the different job sites out there: local area vs national, by industry, management vs sole contribuitor.

As far as a critique on the first post I'm somewhere between Nicole and Edward. The length is good, but I'd like to see more hilighting of points by using bold or color. For example, "don’t just rely on me to find your new opportunity" should be hilighted. If someone is skimming you want that to jump out at them.

This might get long, but I feel the need to address it fully, as the post itself was very thorough:
1. Do both - you need to get involved in other things while staying on top of homework. My highschool boyfriend was involved with everything but homework. That continued in college which he never finished. He's the cable guy now, and I did my homework, was moderately involved, and now have a career.
2. Sure, if there is something that really needs fixing, but from advice of a woman I respect who is in her sixties, this should be saved as a tool to stay "updated" later in life, while being healthy when young is more important.
3. Assuming everyone wants to go to business school or grad school? Why? And grad school is totally useless for most people unless they determined through at least 2 years of work experience what they want to do with their career.
4. I married at 26 and somewhat agree with this one. Don't be afraid of "settling down" although advice shouldn't be to "settle" as it almost seems to be.
5. Maternity leave is a joke in this country and should be addressed at government level. Most countries concede 1 year is a good time period, and USA should as well. But employing some of Penelope's advice could get you a bad reputation in your industry - bad advice.
6. I agree to a point. More and more men stay home or work part-time while taking care of home and kids. Mine does. Working on your marriage is important, and someone will always have a support role. But as a kid who asked my parents to please finally get a divorce when I was 15 I vehemently disagree that staying together is always better for the kids, and research is still split on this.
7. Good points - financial independence.
8. Really, everyone wants to do a startup? I worked for two small businesses ran by men and they were both horrible businessmen and ran them into the ground, in spite of putting in long hours. Partner with someone you can trust, sex is irrelevant.
9. Whatever.
10. Bad advice - homeschooling is a full time job that most people fail at. It is illegal in my home country. Find a good school district, there are plenty, and homeschool in addition if you deem it necessary (my grandfather did this with me and it was great).
11. & 12. While I partially agree with this I think that people in their forties and younger are ill-equipped to give advice to people in their forties and older and unlike Penelope I would hate to attempt it.
I think Penelope overstepped and while she had some good points she offered some really bad strategies. And based on her comments she seems to think she's addressing a much larger portion of population than she truly is - only a fraction of women share her goals, far from majority. I really believed she had a broader viewpoint of people, life and world, I'm sorely disappointed in her.

@Kelly, I haven't thought about getting a "professional haircut"; what a great idea! I've mostly kept my hair in a long-layered bob for easy low maintenance, but maybe adding low lights/high lights will add some oomph into it.

I set expectations with people as well such as "give me a call whenever you're in town" or "chat with you again when we run into each other years from now".

Does it hurt my network? I don't think so. We have an unspoken agreement. I've picked up with people 5 years later and get help. The reverse is true as well with friends of friends calling me up and using someone's name. I always double check first that it is a valid connection before I help.

The only insane thing that I deal with is Holiday cards because I start writing the months in advance personalized notes to get all my 1500 cards done by Christmas. I handle this by keeping a stack of cards on hand and writing a joke or comment when someone comes to mind. Then the card is done.

I have a strict definition of true friends vs. casual friends (there are 4 layers). The only people I make strong efforts to stay in touch with are family and true friends. These are the people that I would drop everything and move the earth to come running if they need help.

In school everything is in quarters or semesters chunks, 3 months at a time then it's over and on to the next thing. Information on tests is only important for a couple weeks. @Tanya, Yep, as you grow, there is always a new skill to acquire and a new obstacle to overcome. But I think that's what makes it fun. :)

Linda A. Hamilton I am attempting to update by web site by adding my business name in the Header. Can anyone provide insight on how this is done? I've researched some forums, but don't find anything that clearly explains how this is done. Thoughts?

Thank you Matthew. I will look tomorrow as I recall seeing that HTML in the php.

@Kelly -- I'll see where I can fine Firebug and see how it works. If I play with it enough I should figure it out, but will let you know. Thanks everyone for your tips and help!

Megan Atkinson Ridiculous amounts of student-loan debt, soaring unemployment rates, tough financial times - I say, don't bother going back to school. Educate yourself. Create your own curriculum and textbooks and learn what's really relevant now. My energy job curriculum sample is here: http://wp.me/p1kAA3-5R What are your thoughts on self-education?

This is rampant in IT, where you have your "paper MCITP"
or "paper CCNA" who has studied and passed the tests, but has no clue of what he was being tested on and ends up being less than useless to an IT manager.

Good call :) Certifications can be a fantastic alternative to the traditional classroom. I like that route personally because the info is more focused to my core objective. Piling on a bunch of pre-reqs for a new degree is just too hard for me stomach.

Jamie Nacht Farrell I've always felt like (and now it's been documented numerous times) I only want to work with people I can have both professional AND personal relationships with. Although I've been told numerous times (by boomers) that you need to separate work and personal. What are your thoughts? Do you separate the 2 or do you have personal relationships with people you work with? What would you rather have? http://bit.ly/i6lZ23

But what I've experienced however is that it's difficult to maintain relationships with former employees because all we ever talked about was work. So once the work was gone, there was nothing left to discuss. So if you want long lasting work friends to become personal friends, you have to make a greater effort to spend time together outside of the workplace. But I don't mind either way. I've always managed to make at least one friend whereever I worked.
