Ashley Garner So It is the 2(ish) week anniversary of my blog and though I enjoy blogging and writing, I don't have any readers, or if I do, no one is commenting. I don't mind that people may not all have the same interest (pre-law,social media) as me, but I would love feedback and suggestions from experienced bloggers, or english majors.lol Also any tips on how to get my blog out there? I use twitter to tweet updates and same for linkedin. preprofessionalmusings.wordpress.com

Once in a while I do ask for comments on someones experience relating to a post, but for the moment is mostly about me. I would like to add a page where I highlight/interview pre-law, law and recent law school grades. Thank you so much for taking a look at my blog and giving me these helpful tips. It is going to be a busy weekend!

Paula Duarte I really enjoy using my commute time as learning time. Do you eschew music and talk radio for audiobooks and podcasts, and if so, what do you recommend? I wrote about some of the things I've been listening to lately in my blog: "My Ipod and Me: a rush hour love story" http://bit.ly/9GSD9U

I think adults love to learn and talk about theory, but hate to write about it....

Rebecca Thorman What technology do you use to communicate with your colleagues and boss? Even though I'm in the same office (and indeed just a few doors down from most everyone), I use gChat all the time to talk to my colleague and my boss. It's great, but because I'm available, sometimes friends will gChat me and not understand I can't talk long. As a company, we also use Yammer. Curious if other companies engage in such instant messaging and short status updates?

Also, we weren't in a position to upgrade to ensure some of the security, and it's also people just don't know any better. There's still fear of SM, so "security" is often the easiest excuse.

When you're doing your first 80 days in a job, you need to find out RIGHT AWAY how everyone prefers to communicate. Some people like texting. Some like Gchat. Some like phone, some prefer email. You've got to ask these simple questions when you're starting out in a job.

Scott Shrum How do you make sure that grad school doesn't suck up all of your time? Do you still make time for your hobbies? You should be! Just read a great blog post from a fellow Brazen Careerist member on this very subject: http://bit.ly/bdi8Cp Do you have any tips for making sure your grad school responsibilities don't interfere with other important aspects of your life?

It helps to make sure you get OUT of the environment for a while and engage in something else, as long as you can keep those type A tendencies from taking all the fun out of it. When my MBA program starts taking over my life, I try to pause and focus on who I want to be as a well-rounded person and recognize that I'm not defined by school alone.

I've finally (after many months of huge amounts of stress and strife) gotten to the point where I prioritize my hobbies/interests in an effective way. I focus on these activities as ways to rejuvenate and relax, and it ends up making me more effective at work and at school.

I schedule my workouts in my calendar (not exactly a new tip, but a good one), and - this is key - I don't beat myself up if I miss one. I also set and communicate limits on homework/study time. I'll tell my husband that I have to work on homework until a certain time, then I make sure to put everything away and just unplug from it. That has made a world of difference in my stress levels and in our relationship. Even though I still spend a lot of time on school, this seems to help.

To make sure that my job doesn't interfere with my other hobbies I make a concerted effort to disconnect from my computer during specific hours of the day.

I'm sure this is similar for Grad School students. In order to get away from your studies, the best thing to do is to put yourself in an environment where you can't study.

Rebecca Thorman Where do you draw the line w/ sharing what's going on in your personal life with people at work? Like, do you tell your boss you're going to be an hour late each day because you go to the gym every morning? How about you'll be late every Tuesday because you're seeing a therapist? What if a family member is sick? Or how about if your partner is getting an award? When personal struggles and triumphs necessitate that you shift work around, how do you communicate?

I think, however, that there is always a line - i.e., it's always possible to overstep that boundary. It's difficult to find the balance, but if your boss or colleagues begin to make assumptions about your productivity based on facts you've revealed about your personal life, then you've gone over it!

If you are uncomfortable but don't want to be excluded, you can focus on light things that don't pry too deep but also show you are participating in the norm.
