Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Jamie Nacht Farrell I contend the definition of "career" as we've been taught is out dated. How would you define, "career" now days? people are "seeking" the wrong thing. People should NOT seek out a traditional career, but rather always be looking for "the next adventure". I wrote a post about how we can redefine what we look for to better our futures...and how that may or may not be a "traditional career". How do we get rid of that "preconceived" stigma attached to career? http://t.co/sLvOA8l

Nobody should feel guilty for pursuing something that excites them - it's human nature to want to feel satisfied. I love showing that pyramid to people - it's like giving them a license to finally go out and find work that impresses the only person that truly matters - themselves. Great post Jamie!

I use Maslow's Hierarchy of needs when I'm mentoring colleagues in consumer behavior and marketing, but have not done so in the world of careers (candidly, it's not my "field" - people are just always asking for advice), but I will definitely do so form now on. That was one of my fave. undergrad psych. courses. Thanks!

Vickie Elmer Job seekers must already have a job to be considered. This may be a growing trend among employers, but is it fair? Why is it being used? When, if ever, does it make sense? Or is it discriminating against the unemployed, especially people of color and older workers? See my piece: http://workingkind.com/2011/02/no-job/ - and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

If you have a good working track record, are good at what you do you and can demonstrate that, have a damn good resume that represents you well, you'll get the interview most likely, depending on your competition. The job will go not to the best qualified person, it will be a good qualified person, but to the person who is the best fit within the company culture. That usually is the tipping point. I have not come across this problem with any of my clients, and I work with a wide variety of clients from Fortune 500's to small independent companies. I have seen those ads and read about it in the media but I have not experienced it. I work in NYC. Yes, it's true, the influx of inappropriate resumes for every job opening is ridiculous today because of the high unemployment rate, but our job is to separate the wheat from the chaff. As it's always been. Many apply but few are chosen.

Carlee Mallard My company just updated its social media policy. What's interesting is that the Communications office has asked all employees to remove the company name from our LinkedIn "professional headline" (although we're allowed to continue to list the company in our work history) in order to "avoid the appearance that an employee is an authorized [company] spokesperson and to avoid the association of personal opinions" with the company. Are there any other companies out there taking this route?

I was shot down on this idea because they were afraid of what it would bring. What they don't understand is that student-athletes still have a profile and could potentially say/do dumb things online. The college neglecting to put their own message out there really doesn't help this.

Jake,
That's funny to hear because a few years ago I knew a company that was the same way. "We can't be on Facebook ... We don't approve a company page ... Don't use our logo, someone could steal it." So you know what we did? We did it anyway!

I still laugh at the "they might steal our logo" thought!

I think that they are and wrote a blog post on it (http://bit.ly/a9WC8t) but I would like to hear what you think. The argument against logo accounts is that people want to interact with people on social media, not non-people. If your avatar isn't a photo, it's like a logo/non-person. Thoughts?

Jamie Nacht Farrell Start up companies never seem to have the right "people" plan. They hire the wrong talent and usually too much of it and managers typically make large base salaries. Where is the incentive to perform? For a start up, what matters to me is that one's traits are in the order: motivation, innate intelligence, experience, education. And the individual MUST be confident enough to be paid on performance / monthly. How do you structure your start up hires? http://wp.me/pMo2g-5b

You can use tools like ...MoreI have done a lot of recruitment for people and there are many different approaches to recruiting the right people. You can use tools like personality tests, targetted behavioural interviewing etc but it only occurred to me yesterday during a training session that the best way to recruit the right person is to see what they are like in their real life outside of work. Iwas talking to potential Project Managers and it reminded me that if you are not a driven, innovative, organised, intelligent person outside of work why would you all of a sudden turn into one when you went to work. If you are hopeless at time management and can't organise yourself outside of work then it isn't going to happen when you turn up to the office. I am not sure now how I would go about assessing this during recruitment. It requires more thought. But... what a person does outside of work greatly reflects what they are capable of at work. Any thoughts on how you would assess this when recruiting?

K.C. Donovan: Darren all I can say is WOW! You have articulated the best point I have seen in quite a while as to the vital importance of uncovering a person's ...MoreDarren all I can say is WOW! You have articulated the best point I have seen in quite a while as to the vital importance of uncovering a person's "core AIM's" (attitudes, interests and motivations). You're right - what a person is like in their everyday life is who they are - although a minority of people do possess the ability to turn on a "switch" when they go to work...in times of dead line stress or work pressure - they almost always become who they are (the majority don't even try to be someone else...).

So how do you go about finding who they are in real life? We have at our finger tips the most powerful source of information - the Internet - and with the advent of social media where people are joining online activities and sharing their views on sites like Facebook, Linked In and right here at Brazen Careerist, all you need to do is to learn how to search for it (Google is of course the first place to start). Read what they have written (Twitter, Blogs, Forum and Chat Postings, etc.), learn what they have joined, and you will begin to get a sense of what they are interested in and what they're all about. Match this up with their resume and an in-person interview for those that interest you the most and you will be far ahead in the recruitment/assessment game.

One of my blogs on this topic (http://www.cleanjourney.com/BlogsNewsComments.aspx) was recently featured at www.recruitingblogs.com and the recruiters on that site "roasted" my views over their "traditionalist recruiting coals." It was quite funny as they bashed any new approach to protect their status quo...the thing is that regardless of how many 8-track players they still want to use, as more and more people show who they are on the Web this approach will dominate.

Hope this helps and Good Luck "down under"!

Ryan Paugh How often do you and your start-up coworkers have brainstorming meetings? How long do they last and how much actually got accomplished when they end? Looking back, lessons I've learned, work PT or volunteer in the field that may interest you. Don't rely on what others or family may say in what career you would like. Only you can determine this (as by now, HS are getting close to becoming an adult)! I did not take may own advice, and as a result landed in several years of missery. I always worked PT in businesses or volunteered in services that were far from being related to Accounting. 10 years later, I am now making that correction, painful, but I know the rewards will be greater than the present challenges!
