Office politics is like a game of chess. You mine as well play versus sit on the sidelines and spectate. It's very difficult to go against the culture, so if you can't abide by the rules, you should probably get out. People hold different power based on their position and influence. Know who the power players are and build alliances with them.

Each person that you encounter will act and react in a different way. Some work best by sharing some humor with them, others are cut the chase, no BS types. It's important to take into consideration whom you work with and their specific work style, and adjusting your approach accordingly.

Timothy Johnson III Hi everyone. I was curious if any of you might know of any freelancers or small business professionals around Woodbridge, NJ/Staten Island, NY that might be interested in "getting things done" in a co-working environment? In particular, I'd be interested in talking to people that are tired of working from home or out of a coffee shop, and want to work in a office space and interact with other people. Does that sound like anyone you know? If so, please comment and let me know! Thanks a lot!

Brian Heys I recently called time on my blog and drew a line in the sand with my content. After trying for nearly a year to write about anything and everything, I decided I really need a niche. Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone recently turned their 'failing' blog around? I'm writing a post series about the process, and welcome any input.

If you want to be more focused, though, then absolutely choose one thing, especially if you want to be recognized for it and Google Searched, etc. But, I literally write about a load of things, with no certain restrictions and I still get the same amount (if not more) traffic.

@Page, you're very welcome!
Even after all this sage advice, I'm still feeling the itch to write about things not in my blog's scope. Not all the time, just every once in awhile. Do people ever do a "I know this is off-topic, but..." post in niche blogs, or is that generally not done, unheard of & frowned upon?

I guess one solution if this IS frowned upon is to find someone who blogged about what you want to talk about, and add your comment. :)

I was writing somthing and it just did not feel right, I put it down, started drafting something else, never finished it. No post up for today, but I got my idea pad out for the day at work. When something hits my head during the day, I just jot it down and see if I can expand on it that evening. Call it a system.

Danielle Albright So I have barely joined the world of blogging, and I'm loving the idea but yet at a complete standstill with trying to actually produce my own blog. I'm somewhere in between trying to figure out the best viewpoint for me, learning the how to's of HTML, and the other various important factors to it. What advice do you have for a beginner blogger? What were the biggest obstacles for you with blogging? Thanks.

If you ever need anything at all (totally get the new to blogging thing...) just give me a shout and I'll walk you through it. Also, a good idea is to grab a Twitter account (if you don't already), and I have a list on my Twitter (@katieblogs) of a lot of @20sb members that're great.

Or, if you want some recommended blogs, I can do that for you to.

TOP IDEA: Katie Colihan I for one am always waiting for the "urge" to do things. When that urge doesn't come, things don't get done. Sometimes, you just have to ....just do it. Get started. Get inspired. Sometimes the inspiration won't find you, you have to find IT. Go to a park, people watch. Hit the local coffee shop and try a new blend. If things aren't creatively coming to you, try to switch things up. Hell, it's worth a shot, right?

TOP IDEA: Katie Colihan Working from home, as awesome as it is, breeds bad habits. How easy is it for you to up and decide to watch something on TV in the middle of the day? How easy is it for you to decide to clean something mid say? If you have the dedication to work 8 straight hours each day, then go with it, but don't feel bad if you have a hard time doing it. Look into renting an office space. You can also vent your frustration out on the non-working copy machine with a baseball bat.

TOP IDEA: Katie Colihan In conversations, always always always ask questions of the other person. Talk about yourself where appropriate, but don't abuse the privilege. Ask interesting questions; "What are you planning on doing this weekend?" "What movies have you seen recently?" Make it interesting. Make it sound like you're interested. BE interested. If you're not interested, the think; "Why am I having this conversation to begin with?"

As an extrovert, the most terrible thing that can happen is when a conversation just dies, especially if a.) you're asking a lot of open ended questions and b.) the person always responds with one word answers. That last question is a good one to keep in mind, especially if the conversation is going endlessly in circles and not quite going where you want it to be.

Timothy Johnson III I'm thinking about the best ways to re-boot and re-focus my job search - my primary interest is marketing.
