J. Maureen Henderson So, yesterday's post (http://tinyurl.com/4k5o2lk) focused on the fact that it's pretty flippin' difficult to think about designing or optimizing your life when you're just struggling to keep afloat and hinted at my firm belief that the approach/assumptions/rhetoric of self help and personal development have a strong classist undertone that is rarely acknowledged. A fellow BCer suggested I mention it here to see how community members see the issue. What say you?

Benjamin Paul Schuman Here's a huge question I want to read some thoughts on. What are the WRONG reasons for going on an adventure? The current adventure I'm thinking about is teaching English in South Korea. I've thought about it several times in my life but then chickened out and/or found an opportunity here at the last minute. Anyway, I want to hear people's thoughts about adventures like this.

TOP IDEA: Robin Mills Is too much passion a bad thing? I have been accused of being too "emotionally involved" with the outcomes of situations (i.e. projects) that occur at work. I think being passionate can be a double-edged sword - being passionate allows me to give 300% of myself to my work and my client's needs, and can sometimes give me that extra creative push to get things done. On the other hand, sometimes I care too much about what happens, which can cloud my judgment. So - can passion be negative?

Most bloggers will start free and then add the ads when traffic picks up...but that creates an awkward situation with loyal readers who are used to reading content without the distraction of advertising. Others decide to set the standard in the beginning by incorporating paid ads up front...but in so doing, they risk turning off early readers.

Aamer Iqbal: Maybe the blog can be designed in a way so that when advertisements do appear, they do so subtly. They then won't be so distracting.

Take some time to think about your skills and abilities (naturally) and also look at your values, life priorities, and your greatestt moments in life. What do all these things tell you about which career path to pursue?

Ryan Paugh One of the things that I tell new people on Brazen Careerist is that asking good questions is the best way to become a Top Member. This is the same when you are looking for a job, too. BUT, asking good questions isn't always easy. So I'm going to ask the experts: What questions should young professionals ask their potential employers?

As an interviewer, I want to know how my investment in you (the interviewee) is going to pay off for me in my organization. So, the more you can ask about the organization, it's vision/goals/priorities/challenges, etc., the more you can position yourself in the interview to be "the answer" to the company's search!

Also, remember that you are interviewing the company. You want to be sure this is the right company for you. So, it's good to ask questions about the organization's values, priorities, culture, etc.

Good luck to all of you who are searching for jobs! Remember, keep a positive attitude!

Lisa Panting I'm hoping to one day co-ordinate music festivals (its a dream, gotta have 'em) Anyway, I'm looking at volunteering at festivals for some experience. Is working for free going to help in the long run or just make employers think I like picking up other people's rubbish??

As Kathy said, it's always good to "try on" an identity. When I first started in Marketing, I took a side job as a volunteer editor with Kiva.org (AMAZING non-profit microlending org, by the way). It gave me more experience that did 2 things: 1) pumped up my resume & skills, and 2) gave me an opportunity to "try on", as Kathy put it, a different hat. Volunteer work is an opportunity to learn, develop skills and build your network. Present it that way in future interviews and you'll be all set :)

Stephanie Ok, so I've read that lots of people advise networking online, posting resumes on sites, loading up a video or two, all to get yourself "out there." However, how do you balance having an Internet presence for employers to see versus letting everyone on the Web know who you are, what you do, how you do it, etc? For instance, if I "scrub" my resume of contact info for safety, how do employers contact me? If I mention work I did locally, how do I stay safe from any random reader?

Nevertheless, at the end of the day, all media is driven by people who make choices about what it is and it isn't private and where the government cannot or will not provide measures to maintain a level playing field between those who own, manipulate and transact in data and those who are users or consumers of it, then the individual must find ways to fence in what S/he wishes to share with others. Speaking of Google, one can extend the analogy that since the Chinese government was bound to find out information on potential anti-government activists anyways, Google should just hand over everything it collects so that State control can be exercised with complete impunity. No technology exists in a vacuum and the rights of citizens to choose how and when to be in the public space do not stop because electronic snooping systems can be devised and set up without any oversight nor assurance as to the final disposition of the significant amounts of information it collects. We are not off switching devices that are either off or on the electronic arena. We are individuals whose biographies intersect those of many others in the course of our daily interactions. Which parts of my biographical experience I choose to share with others should be left entirely up to me and not to some aggregator of information.

Stephanie: @thenightway, Well put. We cannot NOT go online, or control what goes on the Internet, we can only control what we ourselves post online.
