I'm intrigued by Muhammad Yunus' distinction between social business & social entrepreneurship. Social biz owners & investors can only regain their initial investment, but no money over that. Yet, social entrepreneurs can reap profit. Yunus says, making $ as a social biz is like saying, "I'm fasting, but I'm just going to have a snack." Still, working w/ profit-making social entrepreneurs, he thinks they still have a place. So, when is a social enterprise more appropriate than a social biz? Why?

About Me

I am an artist, student/scholar and social entrepreneur.

I'm currently pursuing my PhD in sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. My research interests include the sociology of art, social entrepreneurship, cultural activism and the African diaspora. My master's thesis explores arts-based businesses, committed to social justice, on the east coast.

Project Live Unchained, is a social enterprise I am currently developing with my good friend, and professional graphic designer, Miriam Moore. Live Unchained is a collaborative global arts project for black women across the African diaspora (that includes African American women as well as black women in South America, central America, the Caribbean, Europe and throughout the continent of Africa--and well, anywhere in the world). We showcase women's aural, written and visual creative works. This project has two main components: 1.) Events--We host film screenings, art exhibits, poetry sessions, book discussions and concerts. 2.) Compilation--These women's works will be compiled into a multi-media anthology, in the form of a book with a CD & DVD insert, to be released annually.

The Live Unchained blog, www.liveunchained.wordpress.com, showcases works and interviews with women artists and writers from around the world.

I became interested in the African diaspora after completing my undergraduate honors thesis on Afro-Venezuelan political participation in the Bolivarian Revolution. I lived and taught English as a second language in Maracaibo, Venezuela for about 7 months before heading to a predominately black region called Barlovento, for a politically focused tour. The experience deepened my interest in activism, culture and global solidarity.

Art & Enterprise, www.artandenterprise.wordpress.com, is a more personal blog where I reflect on my research interests, art, life, culture and entrepreneurial thinking.

I love connecting with entrepreneurial and creative spirits; if you have any questions or comments, just drop me a line.

Cheers,
Kathryn
