Katherine Liew Have you heard about the World's Coolest Intern competition by Standard Chartered? It's a great opportunity - $30,000 for a 6 month social media internship! http://katherineliew.wordpress.com/2010/10/19/worlds-coolest-intern/

Kim N. Campbell Let's talk strategy. I'm interning at a startup and am in charge of their communications but haven't gotten any clear feedback on what the company's communications goals are. How do you guys identify social media goals for your companies? How do you boil that down to measurable objectives?

It has helped my company get a better grasp on what we're trying to accomplish strategically, and the best way to meet those strategic initiatives. I think some of this may be slightly dated, but I have found it helpful nonetheless.

Thanks everyone,

The way I've been thinking about it is that the people who we want to attract as customers are the folks we want to engage with online and the platforms we want to build a presence on will depend on the platforms being used by those target markets. I think the challenges for me is identifying the priority target audience. I'm just going to propose who I think we should target and how, then see what the response is. I appreciate all the info you guys shared. I'll incorporate the feedback as I work on the proposal tonight.

Becky Benishek I just heard about the Ecademy site. I haven't gone too far into it at all, but can't help but compare it to LinkedIn. Is it any better than LinkedIn, or complementary to it? Or necessary? http://www.ecademy.com/

LinkedIn definitely has the advantage in users + Alexa ranking is better. But if there's a different or better crowd on ecademy I'd use both - looks decent. Nice find!

@Katherine, It does sound like it's complementary to LinkedIn and at the very least doesn't _hurt_ your career to jump in.

Tameem Qazi Are attending business networking events worth paying for especially if you're new in town?

Many dislike attending the formal networking because everyone is vying for their time. But they'll go somewhere close by to relax with the very inner circle before heading back to their hotel. A drink costs a lot less than a formal networking event.

Networking is undeniably important, but be smart about it.

Rebecca Thorman Does anyone have experience creating a "Community Board of Directors" or a "Customer Advisory Board" or something to that effect? I'm not sure that's the right terminology, but would love to hear any ideas on how you get your customer or community evangelists more involved through more formalized relationships...

The biggest thing I took away from that was you have to fully understand your values/organizational values & goals. What are you trying to achieve by having a board? This will give you direction as to what the board needs to accomplish. The people you ask to be on your board likely have lots of other committments so you need to be clear about what you need from them.

You also have to put a lot of thought into what's in it for them. People don't sit on boards for the good of their health because it takes time away from all the other really important things in their lives like work, family, etc. Once you identify your values you can choose people to sit on your board that align with those values & that gives you a better chance of having an engaged board who genuinely believes in your cause.

I am currently working with a start-up looking to develop a community that helps content publishers better connect with their readers online. One place we see a need for this is in helping not for profits connect and share information with their donors, volunteers and supporters. Would that be something you would be interested in? It involves a quick little exercise and seven follow up questions.
