Tyler Durbin I just had a conversation with the Director of Social Media for a non-profit foundation. With 85% of their donors over the age of 50, he told that the biggest challenge facing the organization was engaging Gen-Y's in the cause with the end goal being to turn them to donors. How would you like to be engaged by non-profits? What would it take for you to actually begin donating to the cause?

Most of us don't have a lot of wealth built up, and donating is seen (at least in my eyes) as something best done by the affluent and established. But if you can get Gen-Y to donate $1-5 (the cost of their iPhone App or morning latte), and get them into a habit of donating to their favorite cause (yours), then they will eventually ramp up their donations as they get older and have the ability to give more.

Successful brands connect with their consumers and successful non-profits connect with their donors. Figuring out a message that actually resonates well with Gen-Y'ers would be the first priority here, IMHO. Once the message is set, we live in a world where Gen-Y'ers are arguably the easiest to reach out of any generation.

Case in point: look at Pepsi Refresh, Kiva, etc.

Katharine Is it true? "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have." I work at a law firm and our dress code is business professional, but a lot of our staff wear business casual.

I would identify companies I would like to work for and look at their website for roles. Perhaps connect through LinkedIn and make an introduction that way.

I work in the nonprofit field, as well as the legal field, and I'm more passionate about the work I do with my nonprofit because I know I'm making a difference and helping saving lives. Even during these tough times where NPO's aren't getting the donations or support it needs, the fact that I'm doing my job whole heartedly is the only thing that matters.
