Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Despite the unemployment rate consider Providence, RI. You can still work in the Boston market.
We have a fine cluster of regional theater with a national reputation. And a fine local music scene.

And a cluster of excellent colleges, Brown University, Rhode Island School Of Design, Johnson & Wales...

North Carolina is nice too, different. Cost of living is less but so are salaries.

Good luck. I lived in WI for two years before returning to RI, don't regret it.

Stephanie Hi all! I have been offered an amazing opportunity to become a partner in a very new (<6 months) very small (2 partners and 1 employee) interactive advertising company. I know the partners and believe in the company but I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about entering a partnership. I'm generally a pretty good negotiator, but I don't even know what questions to ask, much less what to ask for. So my question is -- can you offer any advice or point me in the direction of a good resource? Thanks!

Zip car has all sorts of discounts that you can get and it is about $50 per annual fee plus $7-14 per hour for rental. It also depends on what lifestyle you are used to- if you want to live by yourself, then it depends on where you live. Typically 1 BR apartment would go around $1300 or so in a decent area. What you've shared so far is very vague, so I can't tell what you're trying to sell.

Keep in mind a few things about marketing to schools: unless you're looking at a private school, there is very little in a public school's budget for new tools, particularly IT. Secondly, schools have real obligations where privacy and care of students is concerned, and the Internet, any Internet is often an obstacle to the directives of educators. Be careful to share that you are offering a real tool/benefit and not just some gadget that looks cool but goes outside what students are obligated to learn in the classroom.

Sal,
Great suggestions and questions already on the table. I would add, start by using your network. Do you know someone, who knows someone? What school did the folks you are trying to connect with attend? You might have a connection there (I usually start with a bit of research / networking when I'm trying to reach folks). The other thing you could try is....just swing by when you are in the neighborhood (has worked very well for me to just introduce myself and connect later on).

Kristen Creager Hello all Brand Managers -- I am going to get my MBA, full-time. My goal job out of grad school is to work for a consumer goods company as an associate brand manager. From your experience, what would you recommend I do to get on the best path possible? What type of personality traits/work experience does one look for in a brand manager? Thanks for your input.

As someone who has been a community ...MoreHi Kristen, First and foremost, good luck with your MBA. From personal experience it's a boatload of work. As someone who has been a community manager for a large company and now am working agency side for internationally known brands there are some key traits I'm seen that might be really helpful to you.

The first and most obvious is choose a product that you're crazy passionate about. Without that nothing matters in the new online platforms. Once that's settled if that brand/product is already are speaking on the social networks, you should begin to engage both with the brand and the community. Get to know the people who are working on the inside (this can take some effort) and the brand evangelists who are doing this on their own time (you'll figure out who they are based on the number of comments/posts they produce). If there isn't a social networking platform already, 1) either choose another product who is (strongly recommended) or 2) start a platform.

One of the key things that I really look for is the ability to be optimistic while realistic about situations and being extremely good with the tools of the trade. In our case, that's things like data presentation skills, writing skills and understanding how to effectively use tools like Radian6. I also want people who can make something from nothing but their own time and sweat equity but who know exactly what they would do if they had $2500 or $10000 budget.

Finally after you've invested in the brand for a serious amount of time (9-12 months) if the brand manager or HR department hasn't contacted you, ask your contacts at the company to put you in touch with HR/Recruiting. Be humble and honest about your situation. While they may not be able to place you directly with the brand you're crazy passionate about at the start they won't miss out on the opportunity to redirect your passion to another product in their portfolio.

If you have more questions or simply want further input in private don't hesitate to tweet at me (@kadedworkin) and I'll follow you and give you my email address.

Sure, there has to be some spin to it, but just the other day I read a plan that was several pages of fluff and I had to pick out the important bits. Which ended up being two sentences.

Data is important to me, too. But the right kinds of data. Is it current? Is the source reliable?

As others have said, a guaranteed ROI doesn't instill confidence, but neither does guaranteed funding. If you plan on raising venture capital, I'd want some reference as to how you want to go about doing that. Look at Twitter, for example. They're popular, but they rely heavily on VC money to stay afloat.

Jonathan S. Ross: @ Monica: You raise a very valid point. At the end of the day, an "outward facing" Business Plan must have an element of marketing about it, but ...More@ Monica: You raise a very valid point. At the end of the day, an "outward facing" Business Plan must have an element of marketing about it, but this needs to be integrated with subtlety and with actionable and quantifiable data.

This is one reason why it can make good sense for an entrepreneur or business to hire an experienced and knowledgeable outside party to help develop such material. Business plans are typically written for two primary purposes: to provide a "road map" for executives and other key stakeholders to understand the objectives, goals and strategy of the business from various standpoints (operations, R&D, sales and marketing, etc.); and/or to help raise outside capital (typically in conjunction with legal offering documentation such as a PPM) for a business.

Depending on the audience that you are writing for, adjustments may be necessary. And you must always bear in mind that a Business Plan is only as good as the effort and research put into it, and that you cannot expect it to remain "fixed in time and space." If you fail to account for actual market conditions upon implementation, or you discover that you made erroneous fundamental assumptions about the market niche you are targeting (i.e. too broad or too narrow), demand for your product or service, etc., you must be able to make adjustments or your plan becomes untenable.

Proper planning is an essential part of developing strategy which in turn determines tactics, but as with military operations, "no plan survives contact with the enemy" and those who are too rigid to adapt and overcome and believe they can bend the market or will of potential customers to their desired outcome are in for a nasty surprise...

I agree with Vickie, guest blog posts are really powerful.

I'd also research other books and authors within your vertical. In my experience, authors are always willing to help other authors. Then, crank out your keyword search skills and research which blogs/websites are ranking for "keyword + book + reviews." Make a list, come up with a pitch and go from there.

Do not be afraid to tap into your local market either for a little review/publicity help. That includes your alma mater, local newspapers, bookstores, etc. Sometimes, you can see a good boost in visibility/sales that way.
