Louisa Zelm I'm attempting to find/get a job in HR. Generally, I've been told an HR assistant or an HR generalist job are the entry level positions in this field. However, every job description for these positions require 3-5 years experience. Is there any way to show future employers that, despite lack of experience, I can learn and adapt very easily? Thoughts?

While I don't have any of the duties you mentioned under my belt, I have a lot of experience in supervisory roles (like negotiating, approving grants, etc.) within student groups from when I was in college. Does this sort of experience count to employers, even though I wasn't paid for it?

Megan Atkinson I've been working on a proposal to my boss, asking for a raise. I've read all the books on how to quantify achievement, point out how I've gone above and beyond, when to ask for a raise, etc. My boss is a no-monkey-business, give-it-to-me-straight kind of guy who really supports me and my goals to move up. How should I phrase the actual request for more money?

She never shared it but the background work to document what she contributed and the wordsmithing required to get it down to a few bullet points and slides greatly prepared her for her negotiation. She asked for a lot and got her most important items.

Is it expected that requests would be made outside the performance appraisal cycle (assuming there is one)? The situation driving your request would determine how formal or informal your request will be. The amount that you ask for should be aligned with the compensation strategy/patterns of your company, your organzational position, and past practices.

I agree with @Caroline that your proposal is the work you do for yourself to frame the logic and reasonableness of your request in the context of the bottom line impacts you have delivered. The key is to keep your request clean, clear, straight-forward, and defensible. Good luck!

Cameron Plommer How do you balance between doing something because it will be good for your resume and doing something for the heck of it and general experience? Do you think about this?

The things you do because of general life interest can still be relevant to your job if framed right. But there are some things that you should do to boost your resume. I think a mix is fine. As someone who's done her fair share of hiring and resume reading, I would say that you need to have furthered your career-related experience, but you don't have to be crazy about it. Just appear to be continuing to learn.

It's nice to have some personal growth as a "return on investment", but really so long as you're a growth driver isn't that good enough?

On a personal note, I do things that help people or businesses grow, and don't worry about whether or not those actions will "look good" or not.
