Kaite Welsh I'm a project officer in the UK looking to move into management, but I'm finding myself on a career plateau. Do you think I should take some formal training? PRINCE2 is a popular piece of PM software, but training is expensive & I'm on a temporary contract (that keeps getting extended at the last minute, making it hard to convince my manager that I'm worth sending on any formal training) so I don't want to invest in sthing when I might not even be able to make my rent next month. Any ideas?

Riley Carson I've written a short (fiction) story. I'm now looking for two things: A literary agent that will take on an unpublished writer, and/or a writer's workshop that will help me develop my craft. I'm having a lot of trouble deciphering between the real thing and scams because to an amateur like me, there seems to be a hair's breadth worth of difference!

Alex Vilchynskaya: Check out this blog MoreCheck out this blog http://guidetoliteraryagents.com/blog. It has a lot of info on literary agents and agencies. Also, there are a lot of literary agents on twitter. Some of them have their own blogs with plenty of useful advice and info. Hope this helps.

In fact, I would strongly recommend that you avoid querying agents for this short of a form. Check out www.ralan.com and www.duotrope.com for starters. Writer's Beware, which is owned by Victoria Strauss, is a great place to check out.http://www.sfwa.org/for-authors/writer-beware/

It's very common for new writers to be worried about scams, but most publishers aren't. Just remember one thing and one thing only: Money flows to the writer.

Kirk A. Norris 10 weeks ago I started a blog for a fiction story that I've been writing. My goal was to post a new chapter once a week. Though I've had a few gaps, I am now up to 11 chapters and back on track. So far I consider the experiment a success. I have picked up a few readers here and there (including a friend who gets on me if I haven't updated). Having an audience (even a small one) relying on me for content keeps me motivated. A lot of publishers won't touch something you've already published, even if it is only on your blog. And how good is it? I presume it hasn't been edited by anyone - what sort of feedback are you getting?

Is this something that you are expanding? Having a blog and gathering a fan base is a good idea if you wish to publish a book, but the book can't be a conglomeration of blog posts. Though it would help with book sales if you had a fan base, publishers generally don't want to publish what's already available somewhere else for free.

Susan Johnston Loved this video about a hospital in Brooklyn that lets artists barter their creative skills for healthcare: http://www.mint.com/blog/trends/bartering-for-health-care Wonder if they'd let writers participate, too?

Cameron Plommer How do you decide whether to shop a post around to other blogger for a guest post and when to publish on your own blog? I just wrote this piece, but I'm not sure if I want to publish on my blog, or shop it around to a bigger blog: http://www.econapps.com/?p=469&preview=true

I face this issue often as I write for my own blog, for the Scribnia blog, for Mashable, social fresh and I guest post on several other blogs. They all overlap in one way or another.

I just try to think first, is it more suitable for the Scribnia audience? It's my job and so it should be my first priority.

If not, I think about whether or not it's suitable for the other sites. In general, I keep the controversial stuff on my blog, and will share my tip and list based posts around to the other sites.

Kaite Welsh For once, I'm in the mood to blog. It's something I want to start doing with greater frequency and I'm making a concerted effort to use my time more productively. The focus of my site is feminist and LGBTQ issues - anyone want to suggest a topic for me? Nothing's really grabbing my attention today.

Kirk Kittell I'm reading _A Short History of Nearly Everything_ by Bill Bryson, a non-scientist's wander through all kinds of science. I like it so far. I'm an engineer by training, so it's a bit humbling to concede that Bryson knows more technical trivia and history than I do. Last week, after a recommendation from a friend, I read Bryson's _A Walk in the Woods_, a story about his (partial) hike of the Appalachian Trail. Funniest book I've ever read -- highly recommended.

Kaite Welsh: Oh, I'd like to read that! I've just started working for a science charity, and I have an arts background so it might be really useful to read it.
