Jason H. Parker I've been thinking lately about the importance of building social capital, or essentially, positioning oneself as a central node in a network of interconnected relationships. What do you do in your professional life to build social capital? What tools/tips/questions have you found to be effective for you in building these quality relationships?

Personally I call myself a connector whilst I'm working with Enspiral - I connect people, places, things, ideas and locations to make things happen. I think the important thing is listening - without that you can't really be that connector.
Enspiral itself is all about building social capital in the sense of social enterprise - supporting purpose over profit. We focus our talents & skills on great projects/relationships with NGO's & Social Enterprises.... we're kind of a social enterprise FOR social enterprises you could say.

I also co-host a series of workshops which supports idea innovation & project incubation for social innovators in Wellington, NZ - where I now call my hometown.

So in essence - listening & analysis helps build networks and pro-activity/action helps build social capital I guess?

I once had an admin who was really mean to me until I went and checked out one of her plays (it wasn't a political move, I really wanted to see the play). If you've worked for social media companies, then it will be obvious, but if it was only part of job, you will have to be specific as to what your actual involvement and responsibilities were and how effective were the results of your efforts. Basically it's an MBA where they strip out the bulk of finance and accounting (although both get brief mentions in the program) and replace them with heavy enterprise technologies. Best part for me was it was only 11 months versus the 2 year MBA program. Same instructors, a lot of the same classes, half the price, half the time. It didn't give me the technical chops to code up an application but it did give me the knowledge to manage IT staffs and have a historical perspective relating to IT in the enterprise.

I'm sure you can find something to the same extent in your local area.

Kristen Creager Hello all Brand Managers -- I am going to get my MBA, full-time. My goal job out of grad school is to work for a consumer goods company as an associate brand manager. From your experience, what would you recommend I do to get on the best path possible? What type of personality traits/work experience does one look for in a brand manager? Thanks for your input.

As someone who has been a community ...MoreHi Kristen, First and foremost, good luck with your MBA. From personal experience it's a boatload of work. As someone who has been a community manager for a large company and now am working agency side for internationally known brands there are some key traits I'm seen that might be really helpful to you.

The first and most obvious is choose a product that you're crazy passionate about. Without that nothing matters in the new online platforms. Once that's settled if that brand/product is already are speaking on the social networks, you should begin to engage both with the brand and the community. Get to know the people who are working on the inside (this can take some effort) and the brand evangelists who are doing this on their own time (you'll figure out who they are based on the number of comments/posts they produce). If there isn't a social networking platform already, 1) either choose another product who is (strongly recommended) or 2) start a platform.

One of the key things that I really look for is the ability to be optimistic while realistic about situations and being extremely good with the tools of the trade. In our case, that's things like data presentation skills, writing skills and understanding how to effectively use tools like Radian6. I also want people who can make something from nothing but their own time and sweat equity but who know exactly what they would do if they had $2500 or $10000 budget.

Finally after you've invested in the brand for a serious amount of time (9-12 months) if the brand manager or HR department hasn't contacted you, ask your contacts at the company to put you in touch with HR/Recruiting. Be humble and honest about your situation. While they may not be able to place you directly with the brand you're crazy passionate about at the start they won't miss out on the opportunity to redirect your passion to another product in their portfolio.

If you have more questions or simply want further input in private don't hesitate to tweet at me (@kadedworkin) and I'll follow you and give you my email address.

FREE, NEW and NOW have always been considered standout words for motivating people to contact you. Once someone begins to talk with you about what you do, how you'll add value by working together, and your knowledge, companies are sometimes willing to pay the higher price for your services. But you have to personally connect and convince them of your value. If they are serious about using you, they will stay. If not, they may go elsewhere, buy cheaper, get what they pay for, and come back later to have you bail them out of the mess the other company got them in. This happens in business all the time. Buying quality means paying more... going the lesser expensive route initially may result in paying more later.

Might be helpful to read those threaded thoughts. If they took your idea and improvised there's not much you can do; if they copied your blog and credited themselves, it's plagiarism. You cannot protect ideas; but you can pursue the plagiarism issue legally. If they took the idea, they don't have to credit you, although it is rather underhanded. First, netWORK Marketing can be one of the most powerful ways for an individual to build a substantial income online. If people treat it like a business, take the time and effort to LEARN the skills they need, they can be successful.
What I find interesting is the language of the nay-sayers here. I'm interested in their personal experiences with MLM.
The fact is you can join almost any company, at any time, and earn a great income.
When people throw around words like "Preying" on their friends, etc. - well, this business is as ethical as you run it yourself. If you're trying to 'get' people, and only think of them as a small monthly commission for you - then YOU're the one preying on them. perhaps that's how you're trained?
If, however, you approach each person to HELP them - find out what they need, help them with a strategy to achieve it, help them get the training to move forward and WORK - then this is the most uplifting business out there.

Hey Stephen,

One of the points that I made recently to a couple of friends was that community isn't simply a relationship between a brand and a single user. Community, in my eyes, is when the brand can bring two people who never would have talked about a subject matter together. That may be actively like a forum discussion or an introduction by a community manager or passively in the form of an event like a sports game.

That being the case, I would say that the super-star supporters are a key piece to building a full community. I'll assume you're familiar with the 1000 true fans idea originally presented by Kevin Kelly (if you're not, go google it). I say that these super-star supporters are the key to creating enough activity and "gravity" to bring people back regularly and having a thriving community. It's that activity that would bring back those who may not be as passionate to get value out of still coming to the community meeting area (website, location, wherever).
