Brigid Slipka Have you changed the topic or scope of your blog? How did you do it? Advice? Did you also change your url? My blog is about fundraising/philanthropy/nonprofits, but I'd like to expand it to allow me to write about all the other things that pop up in my head. The best topic I can think of that encompasses everything I want to write about is "philosophy" or even "living." On the one hand, that feels so broad, but on the other hand, I don't want to limit myself.

Lately I have been writing more about general topics, such as the design process and inspirations, using old posts as hyperlinks to tie it all together. Keep at it, its all worth it!

I didn't know I wanted to work for a start-up until I started working for one. I had never given it any thought.

I suppose some people would see some of the things I experienced as negative, but I loved it.

During my first summer as an intern (two years ago now!!), three of us sat in one cubicle, back-to-back. We rented space from an accounting firm for the longest time and felt kind of uncomfortable because we were very start-up-y and Gen Y and they were...well...accountants.

When I came on as a full-time employee after graduating, my salary was small and we didn't have health benefits, but with a little bit of patience, that has changed significantly. As the company grows, so does my own career.

And I'm not a founder, so perhaps I don't have any of the fame or glory, but I know in my heart that I have helped build something amazing and successful and sustainable. And the founder of the company knows it too!

It ring fences my freelance writing time, and allows me to have a life too. The trick is to not take on too much and to be 100% working when you're working i.e. not checking emails, web surfing etc. Hope this helps.

It's not so much the actual freelance work, but balancing that with blogging, reading other blogs, e-mail, networking, etc. I'm trying to do as much as possible during my lunch break. There's a really nice library with private study rooms and free wifi a block from my office, so I go there and write and do as much as I can during that time. I go in with a list of specific items to accomplish so I don't waste time figuring out what to do. That's helping a lot. I think I may try the same thing at home. Set an hour time limit and sit at my desk instead of the couch or comfy chair and do a set amount of activities. Maybe something similar would work for you?

Then I became excited about digging in and helping to right wrongs, assist the "little guys" and hold government and business accountable for their actions. I still really like it, though so much of the writing has become formulaic and not all that exciting.

Since she started with the paper she is they have gone from a bi-weekly to a weekly and then 24 pages to 14 for the section she writes. Times are tough for the small town papers! Even the big ones are crumpling, the Seattle PI for example. I am still not sure what the future is for them.

Hi May and Jenn! Thanks for your msgs :)

I used to study in Vienna and tried to get into Berlitz there, but not having an EU visa was a BIG problem!

I'm now thinking of Asia, but am a little worried about the whole teaching aspect - do they just throw you in front of a class and hope for the best? :S Anything I should watch out for? Thx so much for your help, Jenn. I feel like I'm doing this blindfolded ... if it's ok, I'll msg you in a few days :) Cheers!

Cameron Plommer I have a dilemma: I need a job, but I don't want to go crazy doing it. I spend a lot of time working on my learning new things, writing content, networking and everything else that comes with building a personal brand. I'm stressing about all the details of the jobs I am applying for and want to be qualified. This process is tiring and I dont take enough time to do things that just put me in a good mood and make me happy. How do I balance. Should I even try to balance or just stick it out?

I would caution you against just applying for a job...apply for a passion. I made the mistake of panicking and applying for every job I was remotely qualified for, and now I'm in a temp job that makes me not want to get up every day. I know it's only temp, but leaving it jeopardizes my unemployment. Moreover, now I can't spend the time I'd like looking for the job I really want. So, be careful, slow down, don't panic, and find the balance.

I know I am great at finding reasons why I can't do this or have to do that. It seems you have a very specific idea of what you want from a job (based on your responses to Jaimie, Rebecca, Raven, and Danver) My question is how rigidly are you enforcing your criteria? The rigidity might have you unconsciously excluding yourself from some wonderful experiences that might indirectly lead you to your overarching goals.

Stacey Laskin Any thoughts on what to do if you're working in a job that sets you in the wrong direction for your desired career? I know it's better to be employed than not! But how do you reach out to other potential employers and continue working toward personal goals without jeopardizing opportunities at the detour job?

Julie Hi all! Was hoping either of you could give some insight in to the legal profession? After completing an MA degree in International Studies, I've been job hunting for over a year and am thinking of going back to school, thinking a JD/LLB may open doors and provide a much needed challenge. I would sincerely appreciate any advice or tips about how navigating this process or even sharing expertise in the area - is it what you expected?

Julie... Slaw.ca just had a post (below) on the limited articling positions in Canada right now. I recommend taking a look.

I'm sure you know the system far better than I do, but as I understand it, if you don't get an articling position, you won't be called to the bar. And if you're not called to the bar, you don't get to practice law. So, in theory, law school isn't even opening the door to being a lawyer in Canada right now.
