Julie,

Look upon your experience as having some positive benefits, which I think you are acknowledging. You're young enough to have learned that the Real World, particularly after 3 years of a down economic cycle, can be a vicious, nasty and indifferent place. Plenty of folks with years on you are facing this reality, perhaps for the first time, having come of age when a college degree and a modicum of competence could probably ensure a decently paying job for years. The "flattening" of the world has changed that.

You can never escape the politics and vagaries of human interaction, but finding work that you can at least tolerate while doing, and always seeking to evolve and expand your skills (as well as network) is critical. Realizing that even if you are employed by a third-party, you still ultimately "work for yourself" is also vital; if you are in the U.S. and don't belong to a union or have a contract, "at will" employment means that you can be dismissed with or without cause and notice. So the notion of having "job security" or "stability" is illusory for many.

Good luck to you on finding a course in life which doesn't betray your principles or values; that's probably one of the keys to happiness and personal satisfaction...
