Katie Van Over I'm working to start up a lunch delivery service for my family deli and am writing up my very first business plan. Anyone out there ever written one for a food or food delivery service business they'd be willing to share? I'd love to see an example of a financial plan for something like this. Thanks!

Katie,

I work for an online ordering provider (GoMobo) and I wanted to share a reference story. Maybe your family deli can use this too:

Jeff Stuppler could sense that hungry customers were just a couple of minutes away. And yet, nearby
students and teachers did not have time to leave campus to visit his restaurant. What if he could bring
his restaurant to them instead? If the mountain will not come to Mohammed...

“We serve one school that is a two-minute drive away. We average around 15 - 20 orders a day, but it's
catching on and should go higher soon. We sent out guidelines to the school on ordering. Students,
teachers and administration staff need to get their orders into GoMobo by 11am latest. The system
locks them out at 11am. All of the orders received are delivered in one drop (between 11:45 - Noon). It's
delivered to one central location on campus. All orders are bagged, tied and marked with the customer’s
name and order. All of the bags are placed in large containers labeled alphabetically corresponding to
the customer’s first name, i.e. one box will be labeled A - G and so forth."

TOP IDEA: Elysa Rice Lindsey Pollak posted 10 Great Career Books for Young Professionals http://bit.ly/bAuWB0 - I am odd in that I love career/business books. I'm currently reading They Don't Teach Corporate in College which is on this list. Do you have a career book you'd recommend to young professionals?

I continually reference "Who Moved My Cheese" and "One Minute Salesman." For the latter, it's not just for people in a literal sales job. Everyone has something to "sell" - an idea to your boss, homework being done by your kids, or dealing with customer service people. "One Minute Manager" and "How to Manage Your Boss" (an old little spiral book - not sure if it's still around) were quite helpful to me as I got into mid-management.

I highly recommend "Never Eat Alone" by Keith Ferrazzi. It has helped me so much in my career already by understanding that business relationships are to be treated like a luxury, not a commodity. Fostering and building your network with meaningful relationship is so much more beneficial than just collecting business cards.

TOP IDEA: Juan George My recommendation for Gen Y's graduating this May that would be to join a start up company if the opportunity presents itself. I made this unfamiliar step rather than joining a large corporation or established business out of college and it proved to be the right decision right away, especially to see where we are today and where we were a few years back! The move will help your career ^ trend towards the sky ^

100% agree with both your points, Rebecca and Lindsey. Thanks for your feedback.

Prior to joining the start up environment after college, I did internships for two larger companies which had offices worldwide. Both were great learning experiences but once I joined the start up world, it really sparked something within me. The experience you gain at a start up level compared to a corporate level is worlds apart IMHO. I believed in the impact that we could make in the industry, strong leadership in place leading the way and just 5 hard-working and loyal employees in a small NYC work space bringing pure passion with them every day. Nonetheless, as you mentioned the risk is very high and there is a chance that you might fail so it will ultimately come down to your personality and how much risk you could take.

I would absolutely recommend that before jumping into a start up after college, that you take the time to actually do an internship with a larger firm to see what atmosphere you enjoy more. For me, the choice was and is clear.

You can also jump in and learn the parts, pieces, ins and outs of all the aspects of a business. My first job in advertising/marketing/PR was with a firm 13 people strong and I offered to help and asked questions to each department / person. Not only did this provide me the experience (and confidence from the positive feedback and requests for more input) but it also helped me get a better idea of what position I would be most interested in within the industry I was interested in.

Well, i work for Saatchi & Saatchi Dubai as a strategic planner and a huge part of my role is to go out and 'xplore' real people in the real world to be able to get to the truth about their lives that the brands we work with can then make a difference to. its really simple philosophy... based on the thought..'if you want to know how a lion hunts, don't go to the zoo... go to the jungle!' So am trying to gather real stories of generation Yers their lives, hopes and dreams to share with my fellow planners in NYC end of March... so if you have any thoughts please do share.
