Paige Holden I found this article on relocation and it's a fascinating take on the growth of relocation and a rising class of rootless professionals. What do you think? Is our generation prone to increased mobility? If so, how will we adapt socially? http://knowledge.emory.edu/article.cfm?articleid=1343

I definitely agree with the premise. I saw a lot of rootlessness among young professionals, especially when I was living in LA; except that was mostly moving between startups. It's interesting to hear about it on a global scale, and interesting that it's becoming enough of a phenomenon that books are being written about it.

I agree that socially, we're moving more toward interacting over the internet. As for the families, I've actually seen more evidence of kids developing "hardiness" and an expanded world view than of behavioral problems. Actually, growing up in a small conservative Midwestern town, I saw more issues come from people not moving/traveling enough. I think it's ultimately about the individual and the family.

I think it will be really interesting how it plays out over the years - and that the shift in social make up will probably be taught in sociology classes down the road.

I've moved around a lot and I think it has made me stronger. That said, I don't have as many long-time, meaningful relationships. But, at the end of the day, I wouldn't trade the skills I've learned from being mobile (adaptability, for one) for anything.

TOP IDEA: Sadya Siddiqui Shakespeare & Gen Y: instead of having a TO DO LIST , maybe its time we had a TO BE LIST. my theory is that if i cannot match each item on my to-do list with my to-be list , then something on each list is either redundant or missing. For example: To do list item: send cv to 2 recruiters...corresponds with....To be list item: to be part of a better work environment. To be or not to be that, indeed, is the question- Shakespeare its seems was a personal development guru of his time.

I think it gives more purpose to the list and makes you more result oriented with the mentality that you are improving and getting better every day. Great idea

Rebecca Thorman How much do you think it costs to move cross-country for a new position? $5K? What should people budget for? How difficult is it to find housing and start a new life? Is it worth it if your salary is similar? What if you just want to live in a new city?

When I budget for a relocation for someone at my company, I include anything up to $20,000! That's taking in all possible worst case scenarios, though. Usually we get most of that back as unused funds. But yes, moving does throw up some strange, unexpected and expensive events - particularly interim accommodation like serviced apartments.

then you have to think about the cost of leaving the community you've built around you in the town you're in behind, and how long it's going to take to build that up in the new location. from people I know who've relocated, that is the biggest cost, and one that they'd only take in in retrospect if the opportunity were a definite, large upgrade in position.

still, i'm tempted by the idea of leaving everything behind and starting afresh in a new location, and being sought after for my expertise in a particular field, so much so that people want me to be closer to them to get the most out of my knowledge!

great topic ladies.

Rebecca Thorman Guys are the new ball and chain? (http://bit.ly/bHdqCm, http://bit.ly/aSwqKx) A deluge of articles lately is taking about the shifting roles for women and men, specifically that women are charging forward succeeding, while men are lagging. What do you think, is the end of men near? Do you perceive this as a threat? Exciting?

There are plenty of exceptions, but there are an increasing number of cases where it is true, also. I have a hope that the current generation will notice their trend and teach their boys to be as aspirational as their girls.

It's the same with housework, with child-rearing, with sharing emotions... it's a mentality that women need to free themselves from as well, because as we want a more inclusive model for women to be executives and to be mothers and to be everything they want to be, the full spectrum of masculinities should be available to men as well!

Joyce Tipping I needed a simple recipe manager, so I wrote myself one! Tomato keeps your recipes as a collection of text files and provides import and export utilities. It's built on top of Self-Modifying Perl, by my husband Spencer; long story short, it simulates a command line environment, but at the end of the day, all of your data is contained in one file. http://github.com/joycetipping/tomato

Joyce Tipping When I said “I do” at the tender age of 19, I thought I was marrying a Missourian farmboy with a computer hobby. I quickly learned that I had really married a Gen-Y techie. Since then, we've moved four times in just over a year, and I've come to love our exciting and flexible lifestyle. Here is my unique contribution to the nomadic spirited community: a set of helpful tips for organizing a movable household, so that you can worry less and have more fun! http://tinyurl.com/move-in-your-car

Joyce Tipping I feel like the social media and online networking hype has gone hand in hand with the rise of smartphones and similar technology. We (my husband and I) haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet, but I've been sorely tempted many times! :) So here's my question to you guys: How does your smartphone fit into your professional life? After an honest examination, do you feel it's crucial to your work, a helpful convenience, or purely a personal luxury? Feel free to elaborate!

Yesterday I used my cell phone to call AAA when my alternator gave out. That's the highlight of my life with high tech. I do not make more money or provide better service as a result of technology although I do handle more paper.

If I need to be online, I can go do that and having it on my phone was redundant. When I'm out paddling in my kayak, I don't want to hear the email notification going off. It works well for me, so I am not turning the functionality back on.
