TOP IDEA: Josh Allan Dykstra I've noticed a trend lately where more and more HR/OD people are being shifted to consultant roles instead of being FTEs. I'm actually excited about this, as to me it's an indication that we have an opportunity to completely replace HR with something entirely new and much more effective. Are you seeing any companies that are building new "people" constructs that don't look like "HR?" (Read all my thoughts here, if you like: "It's Time For HR To Die" http://bit.ly/kO0AX8.)

Jamie Nacht Farrell I have 2 contracts with a small / mid size company - worth about $50 million. One is a consulting contract (monthly retainer) and one is a broker's contract. I'm supposed to be paid "X" every 2 weeks on the consulting and 5% of net revenue on the broker's contracts net 45 days post months end; The company is 1 month late with payments and is always late..BUT I get a lot of money from them...I just CCed my lawyer on the last email back to them. (for future) And as far as you doing a fabulous job that they haven't recognized as of yet you hold the cards it's your leverage, you have a 10 m dollar contract, what are the company benifits from this contract? If you mention their competitors as someone you are thinking of doing business with they may jump thru hoops on a spring board so to speak especially as you are closing on a deal that will give them an upper edge and will provide them with far more than 10M in revenue. Perhaps point out the benefits of your services and that the other 5 contracts you have lined up you haven't considered as of YET. Since you've done the research, have exclusive rights to contacts you are in control. (Exclusive contracts cost a lot more money)

You've put time and energy into this company and if they do not take you seriously you are prepared to move on to a serious company with serious intentions that pay you on time.

Nothing is fair in life, business or love. You have choices and keep moving forward, you DO hold all the cards right now and you are NOT dependent on this company. You are dependent only on your company and your business sense.

You are indespensible, you are worth more than they are paying you and you do not want to dwell on legal issues. You want to provide outstanding value they cannot get any where else.

I cannot wait to hear how it all goes for you. Best to your endevours ... keep forging forward in a productive manner!

But what I've experienced however is that it's difficult to maintain relationships with former employees because all we ever talked about was work. So once the work was gone, there was nothing left to discuss. So if you want long lasting work friends to become personal friends, you have to make a greater effort to spend time together outside of the workplace. But I don't mind either way. I've always managed to make at least one friend whereever I worked.

Sort of a Q&A strategy. If a specific team in encountering a problem, or has a strategy for success they should be encouraged to share it, and this way people can comment and perhaps, help solve a roadblock like issue, or offer suggestions on process, etc. Since most likely, problems and successes have been encountered on varying levels and degrees by specific teams and offices.

I did discover recently that we have access to Chatter through Salesforce and it looks like it could really meet our needs well.
@Lia, I am currently working on a project kind of in line with your comments. I'm compiling a sustainability field manual that all offices can use to implement different systems. We did a survey of offices and what they felt they implemented successfully in 2010 and then asked each office to write a how-to guide to duplicate their efforts in other offices. We'll be posting it on our intranet for all to use. My problem is how to get offices to use it and get engaged in taking more steps this year. We held a reduce/reuse/recycle competition last year and this year everyone's enthusiasm has fizzled.

Heath is right: strategy is often top-down (even in small companies) and it's also rarely communicated to the right people. So you may have a huge team--or a team of 5-- none of whom know if there's a strategy, what that strategy is, or what their role is in accomplishing it.

Huge problem. If your people don't believe, your company won't thrive. Your job is to get them on board and to look at the big picture, if you're a CEO or owner, not be the only person in the room with the power to make a decision. That's the exact opposite of execution!

Sometimes I think that technology has "inflicted" us with ADHD. But recently I've gotten some new ideas about how it all works.

First, I think that the internet is not "the problem," the problem is that the internet makes it easy for us to forget that it takes focus to truly grasp a subject. I think we all like the feeling that we can master a subject from skimming a few paragraphs on it. The internet enables that. I don't think the internet causes it in any way.

Second, I think that the internet has helped me to determine more easily the quality of a book. The thing is, I used to think, "Oh shit, I can't sit still long enough for a book anymore!" But then I realized that I've always had a variable attention span when it comes to books. It's just that, before we had all these distractions, it was easier to read books that bore us. It's bizarre. Many new books make me want to surf the web. But Frankenstein can still hold my attention.

I feel like we're in an era where the measure of quality in books is "Is this book better than the internet?" The good thing is that the best books are!
