Tariq West What does "starving college student" mean? It's a recurring motif in American culture, but I've never quite understood it. I understand that it reflects some realities around the struggles that college students face, but there's more to it than that. Among other things, it's seems to be about the experience of privilege in parental households and the contrast between that and some college experiences. To be a "starving college student" did you have to be a well-fed, pampered high-school student?

I was so broke in college I ate top ramen and oatmeal daily. =) But I think that's what makes us appreciate the real world afterward. Obviously, if you have a wealthy family, you may never fit this stereotype.

Meagan Trying to find ways to improve promoting my blog, especially now that I'm going to be posting consistently. Would love to hear what others are doing besides the standard Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn feed.

@Meagan "the blog promotion plan seems to apply more to a business establishing itself."

But you are a business, you are… You Inc ;-) have you ever read "The Personal Branding Blog" (http://personalbrandingblog.com/) or the book Me 2.0 by Dan Schawbel (that is his blog, and he is one of the co-founders of this website I believe). They are both geared to Gen-Y establishing their own identity and reputation online. My own blog is focused on similar issues but geared toward the Gen-X male. I want o use my blog as an apparatus to change careers. I am currently a very well established expert in the field of Database Administration. After twenty years… I want to transition to something new. I want to use my blog, and social media to establish myself in a new field over the next 24 months. In the end game, we may have similar goals for our blogs.

However, I guess I am still hesitant to make that bold step and truly just apply it to myself. I guess now that I've confronted that fact there is only one thing left to do and that's get to work.

Thanks, again. =]

Career Jockey Just got caught up on some of the earlier blogs. I'm teaching Writing for Interactive Media and it's all about blogging. Very different from what it had been a while back.

Career Jockey I'm getting ready to launch a new column on my blog aimed at helping students discern their majors and prepare to launch. I'll soon be looking for students wanting to write about their journey, struggles and successes. Looking forward to participating.

Erick,

I would argue that Wordpress Plugins are the sole most important feature and reason why you NEED a self hosted blog. They are powerful, super powerful.

That being said, many people aren't interested in the mundane and often-daunting tasks associated with maintaining a self-hosted WordPress installation. For those individuals, the free WordPress.com solution or a service such as Page.ly are better options. The latter does let users install plugins and themes, providing a greater degree of flexibility and customization.

angelica perez Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I recently relaunched my blog and renamed it to: Salon Angelica, a blog spa for smart, busy women. I need specific feedback on my splash page -- whether it gets in the way or not; and what type of reaction do you get when you see it. Also, does the splash page match the content and overall concept of the blogsite? I know it is a lot to ask, but I'll be more than happy to do the same for you guys. So, if anyone wants to exchange feedback, I'm here. Thanks!
