Shelley Donovan I'm curious if anyone has experience with an organization that moved from the standard policy of accruing vacation, sick, personal, and other categories of days off to a more streamlined PTO policy where there is only one bank of accrued time? If so, would you recommend it?

First, you want to make sure that your company culture is supportive of the fact that with PTO employees may be out of the office more often than they are when you have a more traditional time off policy. Typically speaking employees who earn vacation/sick time tend not to use all of their sick time each year - but with PTO, more employees will use all of their PTO each year. This means more time out of the office, of course. So as long as your culture is one that supports this, then PTO can be a great benefit.

My second piece of advice concerns the fact that you will find an employee or two who will refuse to use their PTO when they are actually sick. As a result, they may come to the office sick as a dog and spread their germs. To discourage this from happening, we made it clear to our staff that employees who come to work sick will be sent home and forced to use PTO hours. And then we stayed true to our word and actually sent employees home when they were sick.

Hope this helps!!

Tony Deblauwe: I would recommend one PTO bucket because it makes time off asking/getting easier for all parties.

Jonathan Wallace Hello fellow job hunters, How do you manage the job search? I've looked around for tools to help me keep track of where I've applied and where I'm at in the application process for each job. I couldn't find any so I built my own. I'm wondering if this is something others would be interested in using?

Susan P. Joyce: JibberJobber is a very good solution. And the free version is usually all someone needs although upgrades are available.

Stanley Lee I have tremendous respect for those of you who live on a nomadic lifestyle, as I personally would be entering such lifestyle myself fairly soon. Do you have any tips in general for looking for jobs remotely (assuming local options are not going to work out one way or the other)?

I'm in a fairly good situation right now (more than half my time is spent being location independent.. only have to report to an "office" 2 - 3 days per week) but am looking for options for being 100% location independent and hopefully having the ability to work while traveling the world. Any particular areas of the world that are friendliest to location independent careers?

Most countries will require you to get a work visa if you plan to work within their country. If you're looking to apply for online jobs in other countries while living somewhere else, you may not need a visa but it's always worth checking.

If you have the skills, many of the freelance job boards are worth looking at e.g. the Freelance Switch one. Many of those jobs are location independent/work from anywhere ones.
