John Mattucci So I've applied for a job at a great company and have finished round two of interview, but then I notice that they have another position in the company open that is perfect. Do I apply for that job too while in the midst of the interview process for another job in the same company?

John Mattucci Ok so I don't know what other Group to post this in, but I need some advice about using Linkedin. How appropriate is it to reach out to people to be introduced or send an inMail (if you have it) ? I want to send a message to a user who used to work for a company I like, and I'd like to ask him who should contact from his old company. Would that be appropriate?

Raquel Elle Bell I am looking for NEGATIVE feedback - we just launched our new Web site that has been at the center of my universe for the last eight months. I'd like your feedback because it's really important for me to know the good the bad and the ugly. http://www.23-degrees.com

We don't use templates and everything we do including our Web site, unlike most, is one of a kind. It represents our brand and our energy.... Which we have a lot of. In regards to WIIFM... Our target market is other companies like ours who speak our language. Companies who are looking for a strategy and not just a canned ham graphic design.
@Jon - We've already graduated from WebDev101..There are many SEO techniques that are irrelevant and archaic
@John - I like your site
@Benny - Great writing - Good headlines I'll be sure to follow your thoughts
@Kenny - Thanks
@Everyone Else - The design represents our personal culture and brand. As far as our target market. We make small companies look big and help big companies stay agile and relevant We provide Interactive Strategy, Branding, Technology, Interactive Marketing and Measurement. We create custom Web modules "apps" and have several full business solutions.. This is all in our solutions drop down.. If you know what I do now It's pretty straight forward... And it's all on the site front and center. - Peace-- Raquel Out.

John Mattucci Gah! I do much better with cold calling people if THEY ACTUALLY PICK UP! I sound like a bumbling scripted person sometimes on a message machine :( I think I will have to write down what to say on a piece of paper. Any tips from people about leaving phone messages that will get the call returned?

John Mattucci Before I thought my university education in Art wasn't going to help me out in the real world, I wasn't the top of my class... but slowly I'm seeing where it has developed me into a more articulate and informed person. Do they care that I went to university? Since EVERYONE has gotten post secondary educations somewhere. I'm just wondering how I portray my intangible knowledge from University to employers.

Also, if you're into design and development, one could say an art degree is perfect. Most developers pick up their skills outside of school and the art background lends itself very well to UI/UX work. If you can program too that's just gravy.

John Mattucci Now probably many of us here are versed in the art of email etiquette. Managing the impression you give to people through an email is very easy to mess up totally, on account that sarcasm, tone, facial features (somewhat helped with smiley faces) and context is lost. So I've had some poorly fashioned emails that made me have a negative impression of a person... that I KNOW in real life! So how does one go about helping that person understand how to portray themselves in a proper light?

Ryan Paugh This TED talk with Jason Fried reminds me of why I love not working in an office: http://bit.ly/huu4YF Personally, I find that I get more meaningful work done when I have long stretches of uninterrupted time to myself. When I do visit the rest of the team in DC, we have great brainstorming sessions that are very important, but the real work seems to get done when I'm working at home by myself.

John Mattucci Main statement I have about Gen Y: We want to work WITH you, not just FOR you.

63 weeks ago

John Mattucci Got some other Gen Y stuff to get off my chest: This whole idea of Gen Y being "users" is ludicrous. Equating their willingness to move to a better job as a "jump ship attitude" isn't true. They are leaving to another company that can develop their skills more or earn more money, b/c there isn't a pension and gold watch waiting for them. Gen Y being team players find it much harder to quit a job and move on. Least I find that its that way for me.

63 weeks ago

John Mattucci I feel that the of Gen Y conversation is often centred around age and lack of experience and not about Gen Y as a demographic in the workplace. People seemed to have got their backs up in "What?! These young wipper snappers can't do my job better than I can!!" On that note, Gen Y as they age in the workforce could become more efficient at their jobs, mainly through utilizing the tools, and skills developed early on.

Ryan Paugh I'm so tired of listening to people bitch about Generation Y. This morning I started reading yet another Gen-Y narcissism piece (http://bit.ly/b8lXO5) written by Andrew McAfee. Gag. The thing is, I agree with what he's saying. What really bugs me is that we view things like narcissism as if it's a generational phenomenon when it's clearly a bigger issue. To be fair, the author says he's sick of narcissists young and old (I am too) but the focus is on Gen Y instead of on the bigger picture.

You've heard the term "same shit different day" well it's the same from generation to generation. People don't change.. You'll always have the older generations shaking their fists and screaming those damn kids when in retrospect when they were younger there were old bastards screaming the same thing at them. Seriously, I'm tired of all the Gen Y talk... Seems to me like a smokescreen for what the real issue is, and that's an older generation who refuses to realize that if they are going to stay relevant they are going to have to learn some new tricks.

I put chocolate syrup on top instead, but the chocolate chips do get melted and the cake cooked all the way through. Do send me your gluten-free modification--I'd love to try that as well!

@John: I hope this meets her standards! This is just a simple cake, so nothing too glamorous but definitely easy and fun to make!

@Rebecca: It's definitely a delectable little cake ;)

@Chris: I hope it goes well!

Just a warning: careful not to overcook your cake. Sometimes, depending on your microwave, the 3-minute mark might be too much. It'll make your cake real tough.

John Mattucci So awhile back, some back and forth tweeting incurred about tofu between me and Mr. Paugh. I mentioned to him that freezing tofu is the secret to getting it to take up flavour more easily (I read it in a Men's Health). But I wondered why? Well I did some Googling and it seems that freezing your tofu creates holes in it that allows your marinade to penetrate it. Also the act of freezing it makes its stiffness grade go up a level. So there you have it! Hoary for bean curd!

80 weeks ago from I Love to Cook!

Becky Benishek: I never knew that about tofu. I LOVE tofu and have yet to make it not disintegrate when using it in curry recipes. Now I know!

John Mattucci So, while cooking an awesome recipe I learned something. Creating the cream for my sauce, I was very worried that the sherry I was using in the heavy cream would curdle the sauce. Well heavy cream can take the acidity of the sherry where normal milk cannot. The sauce turned out fantastic for the seasoned pork tenderloin I cooked up. MAN it was good! :) Check out the recipe here: http://bit.ly/9pqt4h For you hardcore cooks who know this, just bear with me, it was exciting to find out!

John Mattucci MMMmmmm cooked up some Risotto recently, delicious! Based it off of Jamie Oliver's great recipe: http://bit.ly/1sRae6 Mushrooms go great in risotto, along with fish like mussles, shrimps, or calamari. I've made variations before, but this time I used asiago instead of parmisian and added tofu. Asiago made it a bit salty. But it was pretty good! Risotto ain't the healthiest, but man does it ever taste great! Oh and for those of you who don't know, arborio rice is "risotto rice." :)

I make a great sun-dried tomato risotto dish - delish! Just this week, I picked up an instant pack of mushroom risotto mix for when you are craving risotto, but don't have the time to put the care in for it. John Mattucci I've worked with many small companies owned by a sole proprietor and I'm starting to feel that all sole proprietors have similar traits: Obsession with organization, need to control, and grandiosity. Maybe these are necessary traits to run a company? Or is it that this type of personality is attracted to being their own boss?

@Benjamin -- Brands like ours need independent artists to keep things fresh. That's why working with people like yourself is always so fun for me.

@John -- That's true. It's rare that those big projects get awarded for being innovative. Another good reason why it's important to be about more than just making money.
