Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Russell Allert Okay, I need some other points of view on this one. I had a discussion with my GF last night over the purchasing of pre-loved (that is, secondhand) clothing. She believes it to be overly cheap and a tad "yucky" where as I believe it is simply being economical and is good for the environment (as it re-uses resources). All I was after was some casual pants I can wear around the house. Any thoughts on this? Is shopping for pre-loved clothing a good or bad thing?

For me, I love thrift stores because I feel like I'm generating less for the waste stream, and I'm saving myself a ton of money on what most of the time is still perfectly great clothing.

Rebecca Thorman Are the rich cruel and the poor kind? That's what studies show in what they call the compassion deficit (http://nyti.ms/ciUwt8). When I used to fundraise, I worked with a lot of volunteers that helped us and one would constantly tell a story where the moral was that the more you give, the more you receive. But this seems difficult for many wealthy to grasp. Any thoughts on why the more well-off you become the closer you hold your riches?

Wealthy individuals *probably* tend to be a little more heady about their financial transactions--philanthropy included--and look for ways to maximize all parties' benefit.

Less wealthy individuals *probably* tend to be a little more emotional in their financial transactions and don't necessarily weigh all the costs and benefits associated with them.

I'm led to believe that this is why the experimenters saw a difference in philanthropic giving with higher wealth individuals when they asked them to "imagine themselves as lower class." It took the transaction out of the logical and put it in the emotional.

Molly Dantzler My love for food & cooking leans toward the more exotic and sometimes borders on "bizarre." For example, I got it into my head once that I absolutely HAD to try haggis. Of course that is nearly impossible to find in the US, so I ordered it on Amazon from a Scottish retailer. I love watching Andrew Zimmern (except for the insufferable lip-smacking) and Anthony Bourdain. Does anyone have any unusual international recipes to share? Or know of a good place online to buy "unusual " food items?

Nathan Lustig Fish tacos with salmon. Here's a simple recipe, but I normally add green/red peppers, more onion and black beans to make it more interesting. You get all the flavors of tacos, but then add fish to make it more interesting. traditional fish tacos are with whitefish, but for me, salmon's better. http://www.recipezaar.com/Amazing-Salmon-Tacos-133959 I'd use fresh tomatoes instead of canned. Tyler Durbin For anyone familiar with IRA's. I'm eligible to my company's simple IRA as of Jan 2010. But my main goal is to build up my emergency/house fund. My goal is to have 6 months of living expenses while also saving for a first home (5+ years away). One withdrawal exception for an IRA is $10,000 for your first home. Does it make sense to contribute to the IRA to get the tax benefits and employer contribution and utilize it as my house fund?

You lose the principal and potential interest you can gain from it. And that could be huge! You might be better off using a different saving vehicle, such as a CD or high yield savings account. You may not get as much money as you would through your employer match, but with saving for retirement you are going to need as much money and most importantly, time, as possible to grow funds. I would research and talk with a financial coach/advisor about cost/benefits.
