Josh Ploch Can you help me brainstorm? I have a friend who wants to start a cookie business, she does incredible product (the cookies) but I want to help her brainstorm some other options other then traditional brick and mortar (things with a smaller start up cost) Any thoughts? Some we came up with are: Delivery Farmers Market/ Fairs Catering business meetings (lighter fare then full lunches)

Cameron Plommer I'm finding that when I wake up at 6:00 am, shower, get dressed and get out the door to work at a coffee shop before work I'm much more productive for the rest of the day. I think the burst of creativity/freedom of working on my own stuff before going to work just makes me happier. Anyone have similar experiences, or productivity tricks in general to share?

John E. Bredehoft I just read Ty Unglebower's post "Has My Social Media Experience Peaked?" http://tooxyz.blogspot.com/2010/11/has-my-social-media-experience-peaked... I've shared my thoughts in a blog comment, but I wonder if others have thoughts on what Ty said.

You don't have to include them, although as many have already pointed out, it provides an inflationary aspect to your numbers if you have a lot of FriendFeed subscribers. John E. Bredehoft Ty Unglebower has just written a brilliant skewering of those who, among other things, believe that Twitter is the be-all and end-all answer to all blogging questions. If you haven't seen it yet, check out http://tooxyz.blogspot.com/2010/03/perfect-blog.html

Cameron Plommer I'm curious if you guys have multiple blogs that serve different purposes. I started out blogging about everything and soon realized that isn't a smart strategy. And isn't really a strategy at all. I have two blogs: one Wordpress and one Tumblr. My WP blog is mainly for longer posts where I am more analytical and pragmatic, serious. My Tumblr is for my random thoughts that aren't really appropriate for a my WP blog theme and direction.

Whether it be profession-related, or just a specific topic - it should be what you are blogging the most about. Then keep more of a personal/freelance kind of blog is that is meant to cover a wider variety of topics.
It offers a sort of balance between formal blog with a goal and target audience, and a more casual blog that can have a specific audience or appeal to many.

Ty Unglebower I'm still giving it my best shot, but I have to say first of all that I am struggling sometimes with the netspeak on Twitter. I don't know what all of the abbreviations are for, since I refuse to use them. Secondly, with everyone posting links and retweets, (and rerererereretweets) I admit I am finding it hard to have any conversation, or pick up any useful information, or network with anybody, via the feed. It all does seem like noise, as I had feared, and I am only following 12 people so far.

However, hashtags provide a convenient convention for everyone to refer to a particular topic. For example, Oracle OpenWorld 2009 attendees were encouraged to use the #oow09 hashtag, which made it easy to find information about the event, and made it easy to refer to the event.

One danger, however, is that creation of a hashtag doesn't guarantee that everyone will use it. For several months, I was using the #openworld09 hashtag until I found out that (most) everybody was using #oow09. For a discussion of the decentralized nature of hashtags, see http://empoprise-bi.blogspot.com/2009/09/empo-tymshft-oow09-hashtag-emer...

Mehul Kar Just went through and followed a bunch of tweeters. 5 rules of thumb for picking people to follow: 1) less than 1000 followers/following (500 if i wanted to be really strict) 2) listed less than 50 times (25 under tougher standards) 3) front page tweets were a good mix of RTs, links, and pure text tweets 4) description didn't say "online marketer" <

One of the reasons for #1 was that I am NOT a new user, and am already following 200-250 "industry leaders," so it's hard to find someone in a new industry who is original or interesting. Plus, I'm at the stage (as John said, not the same stage as everyone) of making 2-way connections rather than just following. So, I wouldn't want to get lost in the crowd of someone with 10,000 following.

#2..i agree with you on this one..could be easily eliminated, but along the same lines of thinking as above.

#4 only reason I hate internet marketer is because i went the "spam-add" route for a project I started earlier, and 99% of the followers I got were online marketers (and a high % of those were automated) PR people are not so bad actually..except they usually violate #1 and #2.

Thanks for the responses though!

I work for MorphoTrak, which was formerly the Biometric Business Unit of Motorola, which was formerly Printrak International Inc. MorphoTrak provides biometric and identity products throughout North America, and is probably best known as a provider of automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS). I started in proposals in 1994, moved to product management in 2000, and am now back in proposals again.
