I'm interested in networking with any attorneys in the DC/VA/MD area who are thinking about hanging up a shingle, either on their own or with someone else.

I am sorely tempted but I don't think I am going to, certainly not in a traditional legal practice. What model did you have in mind? 115 weeks ago

Not really sure. I have some friends that are considering an office-share before moving into a full-blown partnership. What about it tempts you? 115 weeks ago
Hi - I'm new here, and I'm wondering: Does anyone have any specific experience or thoughts to share on leaving the field of law? I worked as a columnist and assistant editor prior to attending law school, and I've stayed active in communications and government relations on the Hill. Now I want to move to a small public relations firm where I could specialize in media and government relations, crisis communications, and other public relations work.
Any help or advice would be wonderful! Thanks!

There is a lot you can do while you are still working. I'd start networking (both in person with your contacts on the Hill and online) and find out what skills you might need to sharpen or what information you need to brush up on. I'd also start going to events that the public relations firms you are interested in are holding. I'd be happy to talk more about this with you off line if you would like. I regularly help people make the transition from law. www.rebeccavandiver.com 118 weeks ago

I just read the following article with advice from Dr. Sharon Lamm-Hartman and thought people here might find some relevance in their own lives. Combined with some of the posts below, like the one from Zohaib, it may help give people the push they need to start down a new path!

Unfortunately that still does not apply if one stays in a foreign country using a working visa (I am from Japan and works as a technical writer in Taiwan). In that case we should still be extra careful not to damage any relationship because we don't have access to the local society's "inner circles." I believe she is spot-on about making up our mindset though. 122 weeks ago
