Jodi Advise for preparing your career pitch. Have 3 types: 10 seconds for an elevator pitch, 60 seconds for a commercial 10 minutes for an informational interview

Isao Kato I would like to hear opinions about changing our job/location/friends to see how it shakes our life up - although it sounds like cop-out and certainly brings tough moments (it is so true that we don't see what we need until we lose them), but I have found that it works more often than the odds of "rolling the dice". I think it likely works if (1) we have thought through all consequences and (2) we are aware that we are essentially gambling and (3) we take accountability of our action. Any idea?

Well, that is what happened to me five years ago when I moved from Japan where I worked as a field application engineer to Taiwan and started a new life as a technical writer. There is no regret except that I need to remind myself from time to time why I came here :)

Jodi I know you were looking for suggestions on your blog (mine is DON"T CHANGE A THING!) but I was wondering if there were plans to add "like" and "fav" buttons on this space?

Claire Veuthey Hi all, looking to get into consulting. Last time I tried, the 'fit' part went well but my quant skills need work. Any advice on how to beef those up? I was thinking of studying for CFA1- is that too much as a 1st goal?

It's less useful outside investment management, although it might perhaps be valued at some financial consulting firms.

To pass Level I, be prepared for a heavy studying commitment outside of your prep class or prep books. I realized halfway through studying that it wasn't right for me and started slacking off. Took the test anyway (imagine hundreds of anxious people at folding tables in a convention center hall) and didn't pass, not surprisingly.

See what consulting firms say -- if job postings don't mention CFA, you can probably save $7,000 and 18 months of studying.

Penelope Trunk And. One more thing. I think everyone should try both: Staying at home with kids and not. It's like everyone should try being a cashier or a waitress. The more different types of work you have done, the more empathy you have in the world for people who do work that you don't do. We should use our work to understand other people and ourselves better so that we can be more kind. If we are not aiming to use our 8 hours a day (or whatever) to make us better people then what are we doing????

All the reasons you've mentioned, the reasons I've mentioned, as well as the fact that it doesn't even sound interesting. "Oh, look, my kid did exactly the same things in exactly the same order as every other kid ever!" What's so neat about it?

Bennett Kanhai: Many many people have children because they feel that nobody loves them. A child will love his/her mother unconditionally.

If you see something that requires change (there is always something), find one person who is open to mentoring. build a personal relationship with them based on what you respect about them (soft skill/ hard skill). share with them your knowledge and skills. let them direct you and enlighten you and do the same for them. other team mates will notice. then encourage more mentoring. great teams are teachable and transparent

Sophia Larrazolo Penelope, what was the name of the website that prospective employees log into to describe their interview experience with certain companies? I know you wrote about it in a blog concerning transparency in the workplace, but I can't remember which one specifically.
