About Me

I am currently working as an online tutor, teaching Japanese and English, currently aimed at adult learners in their early stages but with large plans for future expansion. I seek to become an "edupreneur" in the parlance some now use, and as such, I have a fiery interest in all things related to marketing. I also seek to finally break into professional writing after having spent over a decade learning, and then professionally translating, the Japanese language, but my strength - dialogue and prose - isn't the most reliable specialist field, hence the attempted career change.

I have a young blog that I intend to be my final experiment in blogging:
http://modernstrategist.wordpress.com/ (The Modern Strategist). I think the title (which I was surprised wasn't taken somehow) nicely reflects my attitude towards life, as well as my interest in the classics of strategy such as Sun Tzu, Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings, and so on, which I have also made the subject of tutoring classes.

I hope to become an e-book (and traditional book) author, perhaps on the strength of my Art of War material, but also using my knowledge of English and Japanese to deliver better, more relevant, more useful language education to others.

Work History

  • Self-Employed
  • Online Tutor (English, Japanese, Strategic Thinking)
  • August 2009 to Present
  • Moving forward as a highly motivated entrepreneur in the field of education, using my excellent language and communication skills to bring better language education to others. Also, teaching the works of Sun Tzu and Miyamoto Musashi to instill deeper, clearer strategic thinking with my special blend of context, elaboration, explanation, and demonstrating how some lessons (if not all) are indeed timeless, for human nature is timeless.

  • TokyoPop
  • Freelance J>E Translator
  • March 2001 to November 2008
  • Freelance, as opposed to in-house, translator of Japanese to English. During this period, I did other work for various companies when schedules permitted, but my main publicly available work (as most translation work is subject to non-disclosure agreements) would be various manga for TokyoPop and the Slayers series of novels (1-8, all that TokyoPop brought to North America).
