Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Despite the unemployment rate consider Providence, RI. You can still work in the Boston market.
We have a fine cluster of regional theater with a national reputation. And a fine local music scene.

And a cluster of excellent colleges, Brown University, Rhode Island School Of Design, Johnson & Wales...

North Carolina is nice too, different. Cost of living is less but so are salaries.

Good luck. I lived in WI for two years before returning to RI, don't regret it.

Jenn Pedde Did you all know that November is "National Novel Writing Month?" Or on twitter known as #NaNoWriMo? Basically you're supposed to set goals and write a full novel in the month of November through self discipline and the help of others doing it too. My company, Eat Your Serial, would love to be a place for anyone who is trying to accomplish this goal to publish their work - for free. We even set you up with an editor. Thanks for the post Ryan.

Maybe I am missing something here, but between my Google Profile and Google Buzz conversations, might I not already have a Social Resume?

Also, I would be VERY interested in seeing the rate and timeline of adoption by hiring managers and recruiters/sourcers of Social Resumes. And, how do you capture the info on a Social Resume into one of those dinosaur-like things called Applicant Tracking Systems that everyone still seems to be using?

I LOVE this stuff- it's getting the culture transformation going which is the tough part.

That was our thought process behind the concept of our Social Resumes. Hopefully, you start putting them all on your Social Resume. As far as planning goes, I try to leave it at just jotting down notes. If you can't focus on what you're doing full time, its not going to work. The other ideas can wait.

@Suzy - Good points. Your Google profile and Google Buzz conversations are just like conversations you have on any other network, they get lost after a few days. Sure, people can really dig to go find them but that's a lot of work, and most people probably won't take the time to go past the first 1 or 2 links they see. I'm also very interested to see the adoption rate of hiring managers and recruiters etc. Obviously as the product matures, we'll need to address issues like capturing info in ATS's. We already have some thoughts but the real challenge now is to get the word out!

Jamie Nacht Farrell I'm always told I should have a "vision" for myself. Yet, I never have and it's led me to success - both professionally and personally. Is it necessary to have a "vision" of what you want in life? If so, does that vision have to include business and personal? And for women, is that "vision" harder to achieve based on the stereotypical 'role' of the mother in a household??? Riley Carson I've written a short (fiction) story. I'm now looking for two things: A literary agent that will take on an unpublished writer, and/or a writer's workshop that will help me develop my craft. Ryan Paugh I just read a blog post from our friend Alexandra Levit (http://bit.ly/aNLDMx) about what it means to be a best-selling author and it got me thinking about all of you who are passionate about writing. If you're interested in writing a book, or any piece of writing for that matter, what's more important to you: acclaim or meaning? Just because a book is a best seller doesn't mean it's any good. If you could only have one of the two, which would you choose? Money or impact?

The following comes from the perspective of someone who hasn't yet made money from writing.

I think that the web has made this extra interesting and ambiguous. All writing is, in a way, designed to provoke some sort of conversation. The web, though, is extra-conversational. Most writing on the web is designed to provoke immediate feedback, and we've discovered that that is best accomplished by short and open-ended posts.
On the other hand, a lot of meaningful writing takes a long time to sink in and doesn't necessarily provoke a direct response. I think that it's important to separate these two types of writing. If you're making money for it and it's on the web, chances are that you are good at provoking instant feedback.
I may be going out on a limb here, but I think this is an interesting subject:
Which is more satisfying, writing something that will slowly sink in with people but not provoke instant feedback, or writing something that provokes instant feedback?

Ryan Paugh I saw something that I really liked on Hulu last night. Whenever a commercial played there was a tiny pop up in the right-hand corner of the ad that said: Is this ad relevant to you? I watch it when I don't have access to my cable TV. One thing I always find interesting about Hulu though is that they're always trying new things. I've experienced the 2-3 commercial break experience, but also occasionally got an offer to watch a full show uninterrupted if I spend 1-2 minutes filling out a survey. I have also used the "relevant"/"not relevant" buttons, though not very often so without any visible result. I still like that they are even asking, though.

I think the reason that sometimes the ads don't change is that those are the only advertisers (or there are only a few advertisers) who have selected that show or type of show. Thus Hulu doesn't really have anything else to serve you. They are still struggling with getting ad revenue, unless I miss my guess.
