Many Director level and higher positions require a gradate degree to even be considered. Furthermore, Grad school gives people who aren't social butterflies a means to make great connections with other professionals.

On the other hand, with Web 2.0 becoming the standard instead of the "new thing", it is certainly possible to forge your own career path and forgo the grad degree.

It's generally agreed that unless you go to a top school (some defines that as top 4, some top 5, some top 10, some top 30. I don't think anyone defines it outside top 30), it's a waste of money. Waste of money in term not only tuition, but also opportunity cost in term of lost income. But, if you get financial assistance, that also helps the equation. Jeannie Chan How to wean out the micromanagers? Imagine your next interview. You are not offered a chance to talk to other team members. So, you need a good question to ask the manager if s/he is a micromanager. What would that question be? You can't ask outright because s/he either doesn't know or won't admit, so what is a good proxy? "What's your management style?" is useless because there are textbook answers...

It'd be pretty easy to ask around and see what types of people the company tends to hire.

As you look around online per Ty's recommendation, also look at where the team came from and you can use that for a proxy for what types of people will be there when you get there.. good luck!

Wow, this looks to be the most recent post - 7 wks old - yikes! ...must be everyone is too busy on their smartphones!

There are several pros/cons about the iPhone versions/providers that complicate the issue. First there is the technology: VZW is CDMA, ATT is GSM - if you need to travel overseas, your best option is to use GSM since CDMA is either not yet available or has limited deployment. In the US, ATT, at least so far, will not unlock an iPhone so be prepared to pay up the yin-yang if you do travel abroad with it (off-topic - there are options for jailbreaking and unlocking, so unlocking is a positive for the GSM version). The other positive for ATT/GSM for some users is the ability to talk and use data (look up a web page for example) simultaneously - cannot do this with the VZW CDMA implementation. I'm on many iphone forums and this is a big issue for many people it seems. The downside to ATT is lack of coverage for many regions... ATT says they reach 97% of the US, well, what they do not say is how much is via partners nor do they discuss their lack of 3G coverage. They also say their network is faster - may be true if you are lucky enough to live within a strong signal area, but those on the periphery will find VZW to be both faster and more reliable. I live in Maine and ATT has no service within a 30 mile radius of my area and what they do offer in the closest areas does not include 3G service. Those who travel into the area get spotty service connecting to partners (actually old Unicel GSM systems now owned by VZW - you can be assured VZW will not be upgrading them to 3G!). So for many people, VZW is going to be the only choice if they want an iphone. VZW has far greater coverage for both voice and 3G data and is in the process of rolling out 4G service.

I suspect that many more recent ATT customers have switched to VZW simply to get on the unlimited data plan. It is pretty certain this will end but it is typical to grandfather those in the current plan. So the early switchers/adopters will be getting a good deal as long as the few negatives do not affect them.

For me, I have no choice... if I want an iphone, VZW is the only choice - in fact we only have 2 choices, US Cellular being the other, also CDMA. CDMA does offer some advantages: the technology is less prone to noise so calls are generally clearer and crisper, it can also maintain a connection longer if signal strength is low so less dropped calls, and if radiation is a concern, CDMA wins hands down - CDMA only transmits when you talk on your phone, not when you listen and it operates at a lower frequency thus less radiation in standby. CDMA is more expensive to implement but has greater bandwidth capacity, the use of random codes (the "code division" or "CD" part of the acronym) also offers greater security.

Anyway, I see a divided iphone market for quite some time and suspect ATT will maintain their lead. The amount of people not served by ATT are a relatively small portion of the total market.

First of all, you don't have a page, you have a third of a page. Thats the part that shows on my screen when I click on the .doc file you sent me. Most people waste two thirds of it with a big address line and an objective that says "to use my people skills in a job that will challenge me... "

You have one third of a page to make me read more. In that one third of a page, you have to tell me who you are. If you succeed, I'll read. I'll read a page, I'll read two or three pages. In fact, I think because people work so hard to make the format look professional, on a one page resume there's so little content in there that it looks awfully pathetic. Sorta like a big white plate in a French restaurant with a 3 oz steak in the middle by itself.

I have about 20 years experience, so my resume is longer - but I also have a half-page of keywords for hits on searches. Don't want them to appear on the print version? Reformat your keywords to 4-point white font.

Hiring managers don't print the majority of the resumes they receive. They print the ones they already like from what they've seen on their computer.

You're right on that the resume doesn't get you the job, it gets you the interview... or it's supposed to. And yes, basic marketing tools are essential to writing a great resume, but not everyone knows about those great marketing tools, or even the ideas of developing a niche market or targeting an audience.

Because today's unemployment is so high, most people are desperate for work. And since many were laid off, their self-confidence and self-esteem are diminished because of the stress and trauma of the layoff. I've talked to people at all levels who were laid off, even the most confident of high-end C level executives had difficulty recovering from a layoff at first.

While many believe professional resume writers are not a good investment, others need them. I still get multiple emails from people who want to write their own resume, have gotten tons of advice from their friends, but don't have a clue how to write what people suggest. They spend hours trying to figure it out; then they aren't sure how to market it. There's a lot to be said about how to write a resume, using the right tools to focus its contents, but there's as much involved with the marketing of oneself to the job market. It's the difference between those who find work within a few weeks after being laid off or changing jobs, and those that have remained unemployed for two years and are now so desperate they are near panic. While some professional resume writers are only out for the buck, the good ones are out to help people learn how to market their skills, create a solid personalized profile, and coach them on how and where to market themselves to find new employer that emotionally and mentally engages them while the earn money doing something they love.

Otherwise, business is a dog eat dog world. If you have space leftover, sure add it for some color and flavor. But chances are you need that space to sell your business skills. On that note, I'm less than lukewarm on the affiliations...

You have a Master and a JD. I assume you're not looking at entry level business positions. I assume you're looking at manager levels. I assume you may even be looking at a 100K type opportunities. Your resume is seriously lacking ACCOMPLISHMENTS. At this level, people could care less what you think you could transfer as far as skills. What have you actually done, and maybe you could do the same here.

Now understanding that you're changing fields, but that doesn't mean that accomplishments are not transferable. Have you successfully negotiated for someone? Have you successfully grew your client base? Have you successfully managed an office? I would suggest that you go find yourself some job description of what you are looking to get into. Make your resume look like that without lying. Include results. NUMBERS. Grew client base by X%. That's business talk. If you want to be one of us, you gotta talk like us :)

I think online degrees compared to degrees from the worst "real" schools are the same. Unfortunately, the online degree with the best "reputation" for being an online degree probably also carries with it the most stigma that it is in fact an online degree. So, I would probably urge you to consider online education program from a traditional school. It will give you the benefit of listing that school on your resume, and may avoid that question entirely.

For this response, I am assuming that you are looking for a job. Keep your card simple. - Contact information
- Your name - use what you prefer to be called, and how your friends would introduce you, not necessarily the name on your birth certificate.
- Don't work about an address - phone & email are enough
- probably your mobile number or think about getting a GoogleVoice number (can "hunt" any number you will be at - also sends voicemails to your email) Remember, the voicemail should be professional in nature if potential employers will hear it
- email - again, make it professional stanleylee@gmail.com not wildthing@ or catluvr@
- Title could be the area you want to go into or what you majored in - try "Business Graduate" and may add "seeking opportunities" or employment, etc. don't get specific on a job title. If you put sales, would you really turn down a business analyst role? the person with the card may not consider for the BA role if they believe you are only seeking a sales role.
- maybe links to sites with your resume, or LinkedIn / Brazen profile. Make sure your social sites have similiar messages and review them to see if they need some cleaning up. Frat party pictures and comments were fun in college, but some hiring managers seem to have lost their sense of humor when they got jobs.

I have seen the back of the card effectively used for including links to samples of work or links to awards, etc. Flipping the card over and pointing this out can leave an additional trigger memory of you with the person.

You only have once chance at a first impression. Someone swings over to your blog and can't engage because there is not enough content then they probably won't ever give your blog a second chance.

My blog has around 41 posts on it, but is still missing enough pointed content that would address/solve a problem someone has to be engaging. I think I am a month away before I am at that point. Putting your URL on your profiles is not really promoting your blog. Commenting on forums and other bloggers posts, that is promotion. It takes 3-4 months before Google lets a new site out of the sandbox, so that is how long you have before you will get any substantial traffic from Google if you have good SEO within your articles. That is when you want your blog to be sticky and have something with sticking around to read.

However, instead of saying how many credits you've completed, just put expected degree date.

I find that you have impressive skills, but it's disorganized, and hard to find. Also, I think you need to really think about your job from a third person's POV. To me "Assisted in day-to-day management of two centers on campus (100+ weekly traffic)" means nothing... what is involved in this day-to-day management? I appreciate your attempt to quantify, but that's about 20 person a day, and without context of what's truly involved in a day-to-day management, 20 person a day doesn't seem that many... Does that mean you have to process a 10-page paperwork for each person, or do you just scan their card and wave them through in 2 seconds? See what I mean?

There's also the issue of credibility. You mentioned that you have published articles... what and where are they published? You don't want to seem like you're stretching. Are you published in a newsletter that you print on your own printer and tape to bathroom stall? That could be totally lame. Or that could be totally awesome if you started it and you really got some recognition for it, and built a community around it. But again, without context, it's hard to understand if that's an achievement, or just puffery. If you have legitimate published articles, list date / publication that they're published.

I'm not sure how your research section is setting you apart. Scour the website nowaday is a very common skill. Those databases are probably irrelevant in corporate setting. Also, I'm not sure database research is relevant to SM.

You're underselling your Twitter connections. Connecting with people on Twitter... that's cool, but unimpressive in this day and age. However, your 800+ follower and 55 lists shows a lot more promise. I would quantify that.
